These are the lyrics, absent the chorus, for the Battle Hymn of the Republic. (What is the Confederate version?)

The Battle Hymn of the Republic  by Julia Ward Howe

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
l can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish`d rows of steel,
"As ye deal with my contemners, So with you my grace shall deal;"
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Shenandoah!! (I guess that's a period piece.) I've been to rendezvous encampments, and as darkness falls, there's nothing sweeter than the sound of Shenandoah being played by a distant dulcimer in the darkness. Of course, I also have to give a vote to Dixie, Bonnie Blue Flag, and Gary Owen. Any of those could inspire a Quaker to action. Course, I'm also partial to any number of tunes on one or more banjos (the more banjos, the better.)

EVERYBODY likes "Bonnie Blue Flag," including myself. Cute trivia: It was originally an Irish drinking song, which is probably why it has such a catchy melody. Curiously, the composer of the lyrics, a popular Southern entertainer, defected to the north late in the war. Subsequently, the song kinda lost some of its regional popularity. :-)

As a kid I had an old 45 record with civil war songs. I always liked Bonnie Blue Flag. It seemed quite spirited. I also like "Eating Goober Peas". I liked the laid back irreverence of the lyrics.

1. Oh, I'm a good old Rebel,
Now that's just what I am;
;For this "fair land of Freedom"
I do not care a damn.
I'm glad I fit against it-
I only wish we'd won.
And I don't want no pardon
For anything I've done.

2. I hates the Constitution,
This great Republic too;
I hates the Freedmen's Buro,
In uniforms of blue.
I hates the nasty eagle,
With all his brag and fuss;
But the lyin', thievin' Yankees
I hates' em wuss and wuss.

3. I hates the Yankee nation
and everything they do,
I hates the Declaration
of Independence, too;
I hates the glorious Union
tis drippin' with our blood
I hates their striped banner,
I fit it all I could.

4. I followed Ol' Marsh Roberts
for four years, nearabout,
got wounded in three places
and starved at P'int Lookout:
I cotched the rheumatism
a'campin' in the snow;
but I killed a chance o' Yankees,
I'd like to kill some mo'.

5. Three hundred thousand Yankees
is stiff in Southern dust;
We got three hundred thousand
Befo' they conquered us.
They died of Southern fever
And Southern steel and shot;
And I wish it was three million
Instead of what we got.

6. I can't take up my musket
And fight' em now no mo',
But I ain't a-goin' to love' em,
Now that is sartin sho';
And I don't want no pardon
For what I was and am;
And I won't be reconstructed,
And I do not give a damn. 8)

historybuff,

Charles Manson lived about 80 to 100 years after the Civil War. Your failure to research is showing. Maybe you should consider changing your handle, or polish up. The internet is a great resource and it's free in most cases.  :)

FYI, several writers have been given credit for this piece, but credit is generally given to Major Innes Randolph, C.S.A.
