Anybody have any experience with any of these? Any thoughts on them? I find them interesting.

I don't know that I would go as far as to load a premium bullet into a 30-30. I have never known a 30-30 to need a premium bullet. Factory 150 - 170 gn flat nosed slugs from the 30-30 and 32 Spl have been used on bear, hog and whitetail since the calibers were developed, without problem or failure that I know of, so I don't think I would go the expense of a premium bullet when a plain ol Hornady slug will work just as well. imo.

I've shot the Barnes 150 XFN in both standard and Ackley Imp versions. It is accurate. I like woodleigh bullets alot, it would be my pick along with the Partition. Honestly, the old Speer 170 HotCor is a great performer on heavier game, i.e. hogs. I would shoot an elk with that bullet, and the DeepCurl would likely do the same thing. I also shot the Hawk 190 .030" jacket softnose over H335 in the standard and got over 2100 fps with it. It too was accurate. I grew up using the Remington 150 corelokt on deer/hogs, SE Texas, never had a bullet failure. I think the premium bullets are nice to have around, just to play with if nothing else,ha.

The Choice of Bullet is how you perceive things.

The standard cup and core bullets such as Remingtons Work just fine.

But if you just wish to brag or to show off some Fancy Bullet then one of the premium brands can do this.

Or if it just makes you feel better and more confident then by all means pick what you like. The Barnes Triple Shock is a nice bullet overall. Sorry just what I have read since I have not needed a no Lead Bullet.

corelocks are as premium as i need in as 3030. Ive yet to have an animal walk away form one that was hit in the vitals.

I agree that the 30-30 doesn't need a premium bullet for it's intended game... BUT, if i was carrying one where something bigger lived, i'd feel more comfortable with it loaded with NP's. The extra penetration just may come in handy in that situation!

I once read an article where a ranger was trapped in a box cayon by grizz bears and was forced to kill all 6 ( I believe it was 6 ) with his 30-30 . It was back in the day before butique bullets . I would feel confident with good old 170 silvertip if you can find them .

I like the way you think Rev. You certainly amassed alot of experience with the 30-30. More is better and playing with new bullets is indeed fun.

I don't believe it was fiction . It was back when I was in college so I would guess it was in either Sports Afield or Field and Stream around 1974-76 . The guy was some sort of ranger and checking an area he was responsible for and got caught . I don't remember the make up of the bear group as far as size goes .

From my experience with 30/30..I have to agree with Shootall......
I gave my marlin 336 to my grandson last season, intending to hunt with my H&R .243 and 100 gr Nosler parts & Hornady interlocks. Well, a visit to my local gun shop..and I came home with a new Ruger American in .308. I already have some WW 150 gr Powerpoints..and when my new scope arrives..if these are a bit too much recoil for comfort, I will download some to 30/30 specs with Winn PP or Rem corelock bullets.
As it goes now..for reloads, I'm looking at Hornady 150 gr interlock bullets..(not premium priced @ Midway)

I loaded some 308 with 130 gr bullets using the Hornady handbook . I kept the charge weight near the low end and they are very mild plesant to shoot in a Ruger INT. they were for my daughter in law but now I use them. They work great on deer.

I had all the confidence I could use while deer hunting with my Marlin 30/30, using WW CXP2.... in either 150 or 170 gr.

I have no need for the high priced bullet. My bang/flop count is doing just fine with the "regular" rounds.

I guess in some cases the better bullets are good maybe nessary but in other cases it might just be marketing to drive up sales/profit. I wonder how much the cost of regular old style bullets went up to cover the cost of making the new improved unneeded ones ?

Howdy! I think it is just human nature to try to "tweak" something to make it better. It does not always produce anything really better; however. I bought some new ammo once thinking it would be the best ever for my firearm. It turned out to be rather poor for my gun. That is why I really like to find hunters and shooters that have found a great cartridge that works well and is recommended. You don't need any fancy bullet to hunt deer and hogs. Always, Gene

it's great fun to talk about velocity, bullet design, this, that... I can do it all day... but within a pretty wide range, it all boils down to hitting the right spot. Took me forever to be truly convinced of that, but I am now. After going through a 270 and a 30-06, I'm adequately equipped with a 336 in 30-30.

I don't have a 30-30 instead I had bought and used a 336 in 35 Rem for many years until I passed it on to my #2 daughter and switched to a 444 myself in the lever guns.

Unless you hunt in open and windy country IMO the 30-30 will do for everything with standard cup&core bullets short of the biggest bears.

I just re-scoped my dad's old Marlin 30-30. I haven't used it in probably 25 years. Put a Weaver 4x scope on it and was thinking about using it this year for deer. The thing is, where I hunt now is not woods like I grew up in, but open fields. So I am going to look at the Hornady Leverevolution cartridges. Yup, they cost more than the Rem coreloks that I always used. I don't know if they are considered premium or not. But if I can go 200 yds with it, accurately, with the Hornady's I will. If not, I'll stick with my 7m-08, 308, 280 or my contender pistol in 7-30 Waters.

It was an article about the 30-30 and its use as a saddle gun in a new age of "more modern guns " the guy got caught in a bad situation and his 30-30 got him out of it . He didn't brag or go looking for bear it just happened . I had a friend in college that was in conservation and parks he was asked to assist in culling bears in parks , they used 30-30's .

I've spend many years around and hunting big bears, and bears just don't hang out in box canyons looking to ambush folks, and when the shooting starts, they don't hang around and keep chargeing someone as they are being shot one by one! At least they don't on the planet i live on.

All i can say is, if it REALLY happened, he must have run into a family of inbred retarded bears!! To be honest, i find it hard anyone would believe that story, at least the way it's been told in this thread...

You have much more experince it seems than the ranger who happened upon the bears or I since the grizz in the wild I have seen were while goose and duck hunting in Canada . As for me I have not faced every situation that could occure with bears , hey I have killed many deer over the past 44 years and it seems I learn something new even today .
As to the story in the 70's I wish I could find a reprint as it would be more accurate than my memory. But it seemed the bears were heading into the canyon and there was little chance of the ranger going unnoticed as it was a small place. Did Gunsmoke shows have bear attacks as a standard fare ? I must have missed it ...........

I was going to post this question in a new post but though maybee you guys could give your thought a little more on a 30-30 160 grain ftx. Made it to the range today with my new 30-30 savage 340 bolt gun and it shot these bullets great. Loaded with both leverevolution powder at the 2350 range and h4895 at the 2200 ft second. These loads shot great and were close to the top as advertized load info. That said do you guys think either these loads/ bullet combo would be ok for black bear out to 150 yards. or would one of the conventional fn sp bullets be supperior. Not sure if i should go with another bullet as i really want to use this new old gun. my other option is to go with my 270 with the 130 grain loads i developed so far. Any thoughts would be great.

Without knowing the particulars on the 270 Win. with a 130 gr bullet I would consider the 30-30 a better choice in either the flextip or a good cup and core bullet in 170 gr. BTW since it is a bolt action you could consider a RN or even a Spitzer bullet.

Well with the 270 there is a significant increase in energy with my reloads from 26 to 2900 ft second. I am really just thinking the larger 30-30 might give a larger wound channel. The ftx has a good bc but was thinking it might be a little soft and the speer deep curl 170 fn also isnt far behind in bc and reviews seem pretty good. Spitzers are really to long for the magazine unless seated extra deep which only takes away case compasity and speed which is no help anyway.

I'd go with a partition type bullet if going with the 270. Nothing wrong with the Speer bullet in the 30-30.
