just 2 cent worth . In places around the world - Sweeden , Finland and such the hunt elk with 6.5mm (25 cal) . They have been doing so for 100 years or so. I doubt they use speical bullets . I doubt there is a deer out there that a well placed shot from your 270 using good bullets will not take. I have killed many with a 25-06 using Nosler BT . 100 gr .
as for you 3030 bolt gun , why not use spire point bullets ? I had a 7X30 waters in a single shot and used SPFB bullets . I have a mod 94 winchester in 7X30 waters and have use pointed bullets alot . Don't get excited one in chamber one in magazine .

I would love to use spitzer bullets and can but due to the depth they have to be seated to fit the magazine the loss in case compacity deminishes the advantage of it in the first place. The hor ftx 160 and speer 170 fn seem to be the best options with the highest bc of the 30-30 bullets offered at .330bc(ftx) and .303bc(speer deep curl). the ftx fly great in the bolt looking at thesting it tomorrow against some water jugs at 50 yards and see the results. I know its not a true test of bullet ability but its what i got.

If I were loading pointed bullets in my 30-30 for deer it would be 130 gr . ( I do this in 308) they are very good on deer. I find that bullet weight thoug very important tends to be heavier than needed much of the time. As example just look at the 7.62X39 . it's preformance is often compared to the 30-30 150 gr. bullet. It has a 132 gr bullet or such. So why not load a 130 sp in a 30-30 gain velosity over the 150 gr and above ? Most shots are with in 100 yards for 30-30's so extra weight to hold energy at distance is not needed. The faster bullet can often over come the heavy bullet going slower preformance at short ranges like the 30-30 with less recoil .
as mentioned I load the 130 in 308 win. I have also loaded 125 gn bullets with good result. I first loaded the 130's for my daughter in law . They were near the lowest load in powder . They shoot very good and drop deer very well at the ranges we shoot most deer here . In most cases the shot is a pass thru. what else would more speed do ? there is a larger hole on the off side so it seems the bullet expands ( since they are pass thru. no bullets to examine). That said at longer ranges a heavier bullet should do better but I would not hesitate to shoot to 250 yards with the 130 load.

It isn't about the WEIGHT of the bullet, it's about the CONSTRUCTION of the bullet.

IF the lighter bullet is tough enough and you are happy with the amount of penetration they give, that's great, but many times going to a "lighter" weight bullet (for the caliber) gives you a bullet that too soft and breaks up on bone, or just won't penetrate deep into the vitals.

I've shot a lot of big game and i've found that a bullet that goes on through gives the fastest kills, plus almost always blood doesn't come out of the entrance hole, but does out of the exit hole!  I want my bullets to pass through at any angle i shoot something, i do NOT want to have to wait for that perfect side shot.

6.5mm bullets are .264" in diameter, 25 cal. are .257"...

In Shootall's defense, I too was in college in the 1975 era, and I specifically remember reading this same article (ranger killed 6 grizzlies with .30-30) in one of the big three.  It was not a mere footnote, it was a lengthy article, full of names, dates, and background information.  The reason I read it several times was that I was in the process of buying my first rifle, and trying to decide between a .30-30 and a .308.

What struck me as possilbly false was the premises that the ranger was "forced" to kill all six bears.  But, back in the 1920s, people were much more prone to shoot animals for being a mere nuisance.

As for the .30-30 itself, I have found the Remington Core-Lokts in .30-30 to be about as close to perfection as any factory bullet I have ever used.

This is too much ! I was doing the same thing , ended up with a Rem 788 in 308 , got it from Greer Gun Company , Boons Mill Va. it's between Martinsville and Ronoake  got the 30-30 a few years later.  ;D
BTW I was in college in the wettest county in the world as the book title calls it Franklin Co. Va. and yes the shine was flowing freely back in the middle 70's . When hunting you had to be careful not to walk up on a still. One road was still called shooting creek ( rt 8 ).

By 1975 i had already killed my first big bear, and was out hunting more.  I spent a lot of years around them, and never had the need to kill 6 grizzlys in defence.  lol

..First off; I am no ballistics expert..but the bullets popularly used in 30/30 rifles, seem just about right to me.  After using them, I have cemented that idea.  The 30/30 hits about 2200 fps in 170 gr and about 2400 in 150 gr.  At that speed one needs a fair amunt of exposed lead and the round or flat nose doesn't hurt.  In fact I believe the ability to form a good mushroom contributes to knockdown power.
The one thing I would suggest is a good "interlock" style bullet..  Just my $ .02

I don't know if it was the Winchester power-points(150gr) or the 26" barrel of the old savage 219 I used to use , but it did an awesome job on whitetails ..also with 150gr federal hy-shoks...

Remington's plain but effective core-lokt bullet is always a good choice.  It is a no frills predictable game-getter.
