Dove season starts labor day!
« on: August 28, 2012, 06:09:13 PM »
This coming saturday before actually. Just got the invite from a buddy in monroe N.C. And I so look forward to skygazing for the speedy incoming flocks while holding a shotgun. Been doing this for over 30 years and the tradition here in the south is strong, seems as much apart of the years holiday as Christmas. Anyone else have the dove season opener planned?

Starts at noon on the Saturday 9-8 in Alabama.
Got four shoots line up so far, plus plans to sit out at the deer lease with decoys on a few lazy afternoons.
Two of the shoots are just about guaranteed to be great. The guy putting them on justifiably calls himself the dove czar.
Another is a corporate event that will have BBQ and door prizes; just hope they have some birds. Only cost for me is shells.
The last is usually a few birds but with really good friends.
At the deer lease last year, I tried Field & Stream's plan for hunting by yourself with decoys. Saw one dove, but took my crow call and ended up shooting 9 crows. This year while coyote hunting , I found a flyway to set up my decoys so I am looking forward to that one now.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Well , it is raining here for the first time really, since April, so I am not complaining. I will get out during the week after work for a little while and maybe pot a few birds. There is no place to go nearby as there are few grain farms, and what there is has burnt up. I will have to see.

Well here in RI Dove opened Sat.  I got to get out today, Mon, Checked my favorite area, and no fields yet to be cut.  Corn was 8ft high.  So any birds would be hard pressed to be found.  Guess I will have to keep an eye out for when they get cut.  Area is also well stocked with Pheasants for Oct.
