Drivers lic.
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:21:02 AM »
We have a hard time finding people to hire that have clean driver lic. It seems many youth in particular don't understand the importance of a DL. Anyone else seeing this ?

Depends on what you are referring to as clean.  If you mean someone who has never had an infraction you're barking up a bare tree.  All my sons employees, probably 150 guys, are required to have a CDL.  They've had to rethink their practices in order to keep enough employees on hand.

our insurance requires at least 1 + point . You can have a max of 5 + points . you get one a year if you don't have tickets. DUI's are also a bad deal. some who apply have 5 or more . What are these kids thinking ?

Well........you can't expect too much. After spending so much money getting across the border they can't afford to buy the cleanest driving record. ;)

Yes it is a factor here in Minnesota. Drug tests are a much bigger issue though.

In my son's business if you get a DUI it doesn't matter if you were just a secretary, you're unemployed on the spot. Want a tough one, try to keep a dozen or so licensed crane operators on hand that also have a clean CDL.

There are still a few young ones out there with clean records. Sometimes it is harder to find them these days. People don't realize what a DUI on your record can mean for some jobs. We have a zero tolerance policy for drugs also.

Had a young guy interviewing wearing a long sleeve dress shirt during the summer here ( 105 degrees +), he was hiding his tatoos. He actually thought to cover them up and was actually polite, intelligent and actually had manners. Yep, I hired him. He is working out pretty good and I could care less about the tatoos, just saying he thought about them is all.

Had a similar thing hear with the tatoos I don't care either . We had an older lady call in to set up a service call years ago and wanted a certian tech. couldn't remember his name but he was the one with pictures on his arms .

Apparently some places will hire people as cops with very poor driving records. Some time back I was renewing my license. Ahead of me was a cop from a small local town renewing his. When he was done and had walked out an examiner said to the other examiner "Guess they let anyone be a cop. His DMV report shows he has had eight suspensions."

When I worked for Volkswagen as a test driver they required a perfect driving record.   One day I was in an unfamilure part of town and unknowingly entered the main street from a subdivision in the middle of a school zone.  Got nailed for 10 over in a school zone.  I took it to court and got off.  I was suspended from driving till after the court date.

My neighbor's son works for a big Gold Mine here in the area.  He got a DWI.  They required him to put one of those interlock devices on his piece of equipment at work.  I think the embarressment of having to blow into the device before it would let the equipment start was worse than going to jail.  Plus the company fined him as did the state for the DWI.  He was told either accept the dock in pay or hit the road.  he accepted the interlock and the dock in pay.  Last year he made a little over 180K, not bad for a kid just two years out of high school.  He also learned about not drinking.  He totally gave up the booze.  He realized the importance of his job and how fragile he was in losing it.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

That's the nature of small towns. They can't compete with the big communities on pay & benny's, so they take what they can get.

That is good to know. I have a policy of not going into big cities, here or south. It looks now I may have to add small towns as well, at least south of my border. Here the RCMP handle the little places although once in a while you may get someone that speaks broken English or wears a turban&beard or both. :(

In speaking with our transportation manager I heard the same thing. There are many good candidates out there but they are already employed! If you want them badly enough you have to buy them out of their current position.

Both drivers and employers are held responsable for all violations now days. Speeding belongs to the company, over weight and equipment violations now belong to the driver too. Gone are the days you could churn through cowboy drivers hiring them and running the snot out of them till they lose their drivers license, only to do it all over again. Now days a company will be fined out of business or lose their license to operate, if they continue that program.

It is a simple supply and demand scenario. Good drivers are demanding an ever increasing supply of money. Shippers are crying the blues when they find that cheap cowboys are no longer hauling for nothing. It is a lousy life style I wish a pox on the companies who are trying to get Mexican drivers into this country. They will not get the same treatment US drivers will get Neither high pay nor will they be required to toe the same high standards.
