Fall garden crops?
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:07:31 PM »
Well guys I don't do fall gardens. Well greens, but they really don't count. I just sew them and that's the end of it. I mainly did it for the deer, but the dog keeps them ran off, so it's just the bunnies who slip in there now.
This year I'd like to see what my options are. It should be about planting time I'm guessing. First freeze is usually Oct 31. I live in zone 7. So what do you guys plant for a fall garden?

I plant greens for the deer, plant broccoli, cabbage , brussell sprouts, lettuce for the family.  I planted squash about a month ago will have squash till mid October or first frost. The broccoli, cabbage will make it till hard freeze. Late October will plant garlic and onions for next year.

Try a small fall garden plot for the first time and if it goes well make a bigger one next  year.

carrots, potatoes, turnips, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and winter wheat have all been tried by me.  Results have varied depending on what the weather does.  Root crops fair best if a low tunnel or hoop house is put over them before a frost hits.
