Clint Eastwood speech is the buzz in the news. I missed it.

That Clint Eastwood speech at the republican convention may be something I look up and watch. It was supposed to be bizarre and funny, but effective as a political speech too. Did you see it, and was it really well done, or is this just some sour grapes reporting?

I saw it. I'm not sure I buy off on the way it was presented. He came off as a bumbling old man. There were more words you couldn't understand because he was having issues getting the words out. Lots of stammering. I find it hard to believe that he just came out in a new movie with no speech impairments yet couldn't find the words to a speech. But what he had to say was spot on- we own this country, not the politicians  or the Obama dictatorship. If they aren't doing the job, fire 'em.

he was there. he tried to do the right thing. i think he did well for his age. he said the right things. good for him..

It was shocking at first to see how he had aged. I can't help but wonder if part of it was an act. That tuft of grey hair sticking up on top of the back of his head had to be intentional.

I ended up falling asleep just before he came on (early job wake ups). I have seen snippits tho. Hey the man's 80 years old and as far as I'm concerned he can say anything he pleases. Hope I look that good at 80.

I saw it and for an 82 year old guy I thought it was great. Yes some stumbling, but it was off the cuff not a teleprompter... I lmao at a couple of his liners, he is a great american icon and great to see him at the convention...

IMO, It was a brilliant performance! Too bad he couldn't get an Oscar for it. If anyone thought he was a rambling old man, they didn't listen very close. He got his points across and he had a bunch of them.

Somebody leaked the info early, I thought Harry Reid was going to show up there.....because a TV 'talking-head'  informed us that "Dirty Harry" was due to attend the convention..

Most of the buzz in the media is an attempt ot discredit what he said.

Still chuckling over it even though it was staged.   He did a lot of good for the community in Carmel when I lived there, even as just a residient, because he had the cojones to face off with anything, speak his piece and had the clout to back it up.   He earned a lot of respect from the locals.   Heard he did good a good job as the mayor there later too.
 
As for the stammering as compare to his last movies... two points I can offer.   Since as many "takes" as are needed to get it right are common for anything that is not "live", it always comes across a lot smoother than off the cuff.  Also that he rarely tried to be funny publically except with friends when I knew and had business dealings with him and he was generally a private person otherwise around strangers.   He was very open and funny at BOD meetings and cast parties though because he knew just about everybody at them.   Being the mayor and having to speak publically probably had some to do with changing that. 
 
No idea if Romney/Ryan would be any better, but they sure can't do any worse than Obama and Bush did.

Didn't see it live but watched it on Yahoo, after reading a commentary on bad it was.
I thought it was entertaining. I think he played up the bumbling old man part.
The "make my day part" was definitely ad lib at the insistence of one lady in the audience.
It was better than Ann Richards' "where was George" speech.
 
But then I heard at lunch that the teleprompter failed before he went out, so he just winged it.
Don't know if that's true or not.

I saw it, I liked it, I agree...No problems here...
 
I don't know if it was an act or not, don't care...I've given a lot
of talks in front of people, I thought he did very well especially with
no notes...

Thanks, Danny-L, i did watch that. Definitely not planned for tv, but very well structured for a live convention audience.  Think the ovations and applause were very sincere, and imwould have applauded too, had i been there.  A clever way to engage an audience over an eleven minute period, make lots of points, and make a memorable impression.

I like it, thought it was spot on for the time.  Wondered about his hair, but at 82 who cares.  Thought the empty chair routine was great.  Yes he came across as bumbling, was that real or show?  Don't know, but speaking off the cuff on nation wide TV with millions of viewers, I could understand it if it was real.  But the most important thing is "He got his message across".

He should have used notes, or a script, or a telepromter. He rambled at times, got away from the mike at times, and seemed to be, no doubt wingin it. His moments of makin a point were few, and seemed by accident.
For a professional actor still makin movies, it was "not so hot".

The more I think about it, the more I think it was a brilliant piece of acting. We are still talking about it. He seemed to be a struggling and stammering old man but we sure remember the points he was making. Think about it - even a stage hand could have slicked down his "bed head" before he went onstage if Eastwood would have allowed it. Could  a person of his wealth afford a suit that wasn't too large to fit him correctly? People refer to his age as part of the reason for his struggling and stammering but I have never seen him act like that. How old is Warren Buffett, Bush Sr., or Betty White? Do they seem  out of touch when they they speak in public? ( here come the barbs for Bush Sr.) I think Dirty Harry is sitting back with his MUCH younger and beautiful wife having a good laugh.

We (wife and myself) enjoyed the presentation, He brought out alot that is swept under the rug so to speak.  Gitmo for one.  promises made, not kept. stupid Ideas made and later recanted. NY city terrorist trials?  STUPID.  +2 for Mr Eastwood

tobster, I was thinking the same thing, he's playing the role of an old man that just leaving happy hour and runs into our POTUS setting on a stool and has a few questions that the booze made him brave enough to ask.
