Dad Protects Son from Bullies by Wearing a Skirt. Guess What? It Works.     By Piper Weiss, Shine Staff(Photo courtesy of Emma Magazine)Nils Pickert's 5-year-old son likes wearing dresses. If anyone thinks that's odd they can take it up with Nils. He's the guy in the skirt.

The German dad has become a role model not only for his son, but for parents around the world, after a photograph of the pair holding hands in red skirts spread across the internet.
"Yes, I'm one of those dads, that tries to raise their children equal," he explained in an essay published alongside the photo in Emma, a German feminist magazine.

Celebrities who were bullied as kids

Pickert never minded that his son liked dressing in little girl's clothes, but when his family moved from West Berlin to a small southern town in Germany, he learned that other people did. In fact, it became a "town wide issue," according to Pickert, whose essay was translated by Tumblr user steegeschnoeber.

A new school didn't make life any easier for his young son. Shortly after his first day, he stopped reveling in his own tastes and Pickert worried about the damage it could wreak on his self-confidence.
"I didn't want to talk my son into not wearing dresses and skirts," Pickert explained. "He didn't make friends doing that in Berlin… so after a lot of contemplation I had only one option left: To broaden my shoulders for my little buddy and dress in a skirt myself."

PHOTOS: Father and son sports stars at the same age

That's where the red skirt came in, a pants-free option Pickert himself would sometimes take back in Berlin, without getting even a second glance. He'd stopped wearing skirts when they moved to their small village, knowing a man in women's clothes could cause rubbernecking accidents at the very least. But when his son asked his father to wear a skirt again, he decided to step up to the challenge.
For that he's been hailed as "Father of the Year" by Gawker, and praised in parenting blogs around the web for his progressive approach to nipping self-esteem issues in bud.

Hand in hand, the Pickerts paraded their custom together around their small village, and soon the shame died away. His son became emboldened again, even giddy at the reactions his father got from slack-jawed strangers. Being different, he found, wasn't so scary after all, especially when Dad's got your back.

After Pickert's son learned that lesson, he began passing the wisdom on to his classmates. If he's teased now, he tells them: "You don't dare to wear skirts and dresses because your dads don't dare to either."

For parents and educators, bullying is a critical issue with no clear-cut prevention method. How do you protect a child from the cruelty of others and how can a bullied child walk away without feeling defensive or ashamed? Pickert's plan comes down to more than just a dad in a skirt. It's an approach that translates across borders, both physical and theoretical: If a child is attacked for being different, don't leave them hanging. Be different with them.

I wonder if the kid wanted to wear a dog coller and bark at his classmates if his dad would do likewise?
I was raised and believe that it is the parent's job to teach the child, and not the other way around.

Had a nephew that liked to sit in a dog box on a buggy and bark at traffic, He even ate Thanksgiving dinner in the dog box. But he didn't turn into a dog.

Dad, supporting son who is being bullied? Good on him. Odd method, but good. Clearly he loves his son.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Cliches don't become cliches for nothing. For example, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. What kind of s 4 brains parent permits that in a five year old?

If some guy were teaching his kid to hunt or fish at that age, the kid would be in foster care within a new york minute. And the guy would be up on felony charges and in jail.

Heres the script for a kid like that: get bullied all through high school. Bullying gets kicked up a notch in late teens. Kid is characterized as gentle and loving. Kid commits suicide after one last and particularly savage beating at the age of nineteen. Parents dont think they did anything wrong.

Oh mein Papa..  Be a man, get him some lederhosen..you wear yours..then take up the bullying situation.  Don't start out by making a jackass of both of you guys.  Lederhosen (Leder=leather..hosen=pants) is the traditional German man's garment.
He's a boy..dress him like a boy..don't invite ridicule (bullying)..and then whine when your child gets it!

The trouble with lederhosen is that the price has gone through the roof during the past few years. Maybe that's why the budget minded flambuoyant metrosexual chooses textiles today, just comes out of the closet makes no attempt at overt manliness.

I think the dad loves his kid alot, he would have to, to put on a dress for him. Not my style but what lentghs would you go to, to protect your kid. I think I would do my best to steer my boy into pants or shorts.

Wonder where the snapshot of Jesus came from? Many get their idea of what Christ looked like or what he wore from art work or opinions from so called theologians, instead of the Bible. The same goes for the long hair. the Bible clearly states that its a sin for a man to wear long hair. So I doubt Jesus wore long hair like many pitchers indicate.

"Is it comely that a women pray unto God uncovered. Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a women have long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for a covering. 1 Corinthians: 11:3,4
The women shall not wear that which pertaineth to an man, neither shall a man put on a womens garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God. Deuteronomy 22:5
So that is the problem crusty. Jesus didn't wear a dress. If you want the absolute truth look to the Bible, not from a picture someone drew of Jesus depicting how they want him to look.

There is other scripture that explains this, like "Grid up thy loins like a man; for I will demand three, and answer thou Me Job 38:3
The only men I see wearing dresses are homosexuals. Yes the man clearly loves his son, but he is clearly leading him to damnation. If he really wants to love his son, he would take his dress and his sons off, and teach him how to be a man. That is the position and job of the man in the family. To teach their sons how to be a man and not lead them astray.

In some cultures of course, it is acceptable to wear such attire..just as 2,000 years ago, the toga was considered appropriate.  Of course, some folks will do anything for their 15 minutes in the spotlight, even if they endanger their own child..

   DDZ was correct when he stated the following;

We have no pictures, statues(idols) or any other representations of Jesus..long hair is ruled out..(I Cor 11:14), but He definitely had a beard (Isa 50:6).  He obviously was not strikingly handsome nor any special appearance (Isa 50:2)  no "aura" or halo.. since Judas had to identify him for those who came to arrest Jesus in the garden, knew just which man they were after.

Right IG.
There is no indication in the New Testament that the clothing of God’s people had changed. Jesus Christ did not dress any different than his disciples who were working men. He had to be kissed by Judas in the Garden in order to be identified by the soldiers who arrested him. This indicates that he looked similar to those around him.

Funny how people depict Jesus in a way to support wicked ways of men today. I guess its no different when Scripture is used out of context to support what they do as good, or normal.

It's called unconditional love and acceptance. I'm sure the boy will be a better person because of his understanding father. It's a beautiful act of love.

A beautiful act of love would have been to sit the boy down and explain to him little girls wear dresses, little boys wear britches.  If he continues to let the kid do as he pleases without guidence he will grow up to be self centered, morally bankrupt, and dependent on others his entire life... in short a Liberal.

If the kid is being bullied..perhaps Dad should have enrolled him in karate classes..If the Dad is either unwilling or unable to train the boy.
In a good martial arts class, he will learn the skills that will give him confidence and be instilled with the idea of not bullying..and not being bullied.
Thereafter, the child can walk with his head up and do it in confidence... and Dad can keep wearing his skirt by himself..if that's what he really likes.. ;)   ;D

The last paragraph n the article is interesting. It says ther's no clear cut method of preventing bullying. That may be technically true, but I propose that having a boy dress like a girl is probably not the basis for an anti bullying methodology.

That man ignored the criticism he would get and stood up for his son. I'm sure his son will remember that for the rest of his life. The father is much more of a man than those who criticize him. Some of you show bullying behavior yourselves in your replies. And how does what you have said about this man, fit into your religion???
