Why after passing a law banning cell phones do we see people still driving and gabbing away on them?  I wish when police pull them over they immediately put that cell phone under their heal and squish that little device.  Do you know the guy who crashed the Amtrack train when hundreds were killed was texting while he was steering the train?  I don't mind a few of these cell phone drivers getting their faces put to the pavement.  That'll teach'em a lesson.  Better her than some poor kid getting run over because of driving with a cell phone.
I say get more aggressive with the cell phone drivers.  Hit'em harder.   :D

That's a little "Sickle and hammer", don't ya think?

You've got regimes mixed up.  A message needs to be sent.  There needs to be no cell phone use while driving, period.  What is it you don't understand?   >:(

No slick, I got the right regime for your mind set.

Really? You condone the police face planting a citizen for taling on a cell phone.  let us know how you think when its your daughter, son or wife that gets the concrete sandwich. that last thing i quoted you on has got to be one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard.

My son knows cell phones are stupid gadgets Americans are addicted to.  Besides being a danger to others, a person gabbing on a cell phone is a danger to themselves in more ways than one.  Cell phones cause brain cancer.  There are numerous studies.  But besides that, they also caused 1 in 20 traffic fatalities in 2011 in the U.S. by drivers who are on cell phones and not paying attention to driving their vehicles.  A traffic fatality, whether vehicle or pedestrian, is worse than a scrape on the face or shoulder.  I would like to see the reaction of an audience of pictures posted of fatal injuries from an accident caused by a cell phone driver.

California passed a law that I entirely agree with.  Unfortunately, the law is not enforced. It is not about your personal right to use the personal gadget that you bought.  It has a place and that is not behind the wheel of a car, a bus, a train or a plane.  There needs to be severe penalties.  A cell phone driver hits the pavement and that makes the news because the media likes to divide and conquer, make everybody hate police.   I wonder how many victims of cell phone drivers will be in the morgue this week.   ???
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

I once heard of a surgeon telling a cop giving him a ticket, "Just wait until I have you on my operating table."

I dont see anything wrong with that.  You can be as mad as you want just as long as you dont take action on the power monger.

What about a distracted doctor?  What if he doing open heart on you and takes a text from his girl friend?  I'm glad you support his right to use his phone.   ;)

How's about we follow the part of law where jury's and judges hand out the conviction and penalty portion.

Cell phones arent stupid.  In fact, I am betting that they have saved countless more lives then they have caused the demise of.  Like I said, a little sickle and hammer on your part there.
It's all a hot mess...........

AGREE completely! Except when it's a cop on trial, where I feel leniency has no place. To once again quote "Super Chicken": "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it Fred"  ;D .

I can empathize with the way that Hairy Chest feels but before I left LA I would see cops gabbing on their phones as well, and this was well after the law went into effect. There was one incident with the El Monte PD 15 minutes East of downtown LA where an officer caused an accident while talking on his phone and he was caught on camera. It was never made public what, if any disciplinary action was taken.

So to condone the idea of cops handing out "street justice" for something like this, to me sets a bad precedent.

A couple of you guys need to lay off the personal attacks.  First and final warning.  Keep your focus on discussing the topic.  Not each other's IQ's.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Well, sticking to the topic and particularly to the question in the topic.  America should wake up and pretty much re-adjust the power scale with cops and the authority they have now. Like Hairy Chest said, lets make some examples.  Take some of these cops that are found guilty of abuse and lock them up, general population, with the same people that they locked up.  Istead of the cops scaring us with arrests and what not, I say we scare them with incarceration if they want to act like power hungry !@#$%#@.

Well, that's what's happening.  Those officers are being held accountable.  So you are getting what you want.  Right?  I don't like that a dummy on their cell phone is going to cost the city in a big lawsuit when she was in the wrong.  She could have hit a little kid talking on her cell phone, but now she's getting a big reward because the cops reacted to her abuse she brought upon herself.  Who is the victim?   The victim here really is society.  We are victims of cell phone drivers who know how to bait police and win a lawsuit.

We also have a cell phone law.  I have never seen a cop on a cell phone driving.  If they are doing that, then it should be reported.  But I see at least half a dozen people in my area with a phone on their ear while driving every dayEvery day.  I say to myself, how come these people aren't getting pulled over?  I wish if I took a picture of them with their plate, I could send it in and something got done.

This is typical.  You're driving along and the arrows say the lane is closing.  Everybody has moved over, except the cell phone driver!  They are literally stopped behind the sign waiting for everybody to go by so they will go in.  And they're gabbing away.  The conversation they are having is more important than driving.  They are oblivious to the fact that they have just stopped on a very busy street.  Lights turn green and they are still at it.  Incredible.  Horns are honking.  I'm thinking, get a move on, @#$%^.  Nobody cares about your conversation.  Pay attention to the road.  There is no end in sight.  Thousands will die needlessly like with drunk driving.  Dumb people with their cell phones. I think they should eat'em.   :)

I passed one of your cops just yesterday as he was driving on the interstate speaking on his cell.  However, we have a culture of "I'm above god attitude" with some of the cops  here ( 16 currently under indictment)  I grew up in a LE environment and have heard all the old war stories of abuse of "power"which was thought to be funny.  I just want everyone to be meeted justice fairly.  Judges on down.

Need to change the laws!

Anyone caught driving while using a cell phone, in an non emergency situation, the charge should be attempted murder!

Kill someone while driving, and using a cell phone, the charge should be premeditated murder! >:(

I agree that the penalties should be stiffer, just handed out by the proper authorities.  A LEO is not the correct person to decide guilt.

What bothers me is the texting while driving . These people are all over the road !  And if your riding a motorcycle you had better watch real close because they will run you over .
It wouldn't hurt them to pull over and park when they are doing that .

I agree !  And I do ride , so I know exactly what I'm taking about when it comes to these idiots .
They have almost taken all the fun out of a leisurely ride . It's as if your on the constant defense of your life in any kind of traffic .  It was one thing to have to deal with the drunks , now you have to deal with the texters , " is that even a real word "?  lol
Or even now days the drunk texters !  I hate the ones that pull up to a stop sign , with that phone shoved in thier ear and don't even look before they dart out in front of you .
And thier excuse for that maneuver is classic " How can I look both ways ? I ain't got two heads ! "
Rant over , sorry I'm getting off topic here .

The only motorcycle riders I have no sympathy for are the crotch rocket riders who speed and cut in and out of traffic.  I had one blow by my drive ( 35 MPH speed limit ) at about 80 MPH......luckily I heard him coming so I hesitated before pulling out.  We had one killed on the interstate just last night.

Crotch Rockets  ::)   FPH , there are idiots in any group I will agree .  And those guys on those cafe racers do seem to take the cake . Popping wheelies out on a crowded interstate , zipping in and out of 70 mph traffic . But they usually assume room temperature on a cold slab down at the local morgue for their hot dog antics . Or they end up staying at the Gray Bar Motel for awhile .

Outlaw texting while driving,, along with the  booze.
But we should outlaw anything that takes the drivers eyes off the road,,, eating,, drinking anthing,,, smokeing,, playing the radio ,,, no animals in drivers compartment, no kids unless they are out of sight and out of hearing range,, maybe outlaw anyone in the car other than the driver!
I don't think you should be texting while driving ,,but I see alot of people serching for that last french fry while they swerve back and forth down the road.
People just get into the outlaw everything,, way to much.

If police are even doing it, then there needs to be another strategy.  There should be a law requiring cellular devices to disable when you start the car's ignition.  How many deaths due to traffic accident's per year?  50,000?  Since  1 in 20 traffic deaths is due to cell phones in 2011, based on that, the law would save 2,500 lives per year.  In one 4-year election cycle, that would be 10,000 lives saved.

Aren't there already quite a few and I might say too many laws which people break anyway.

If there was a law against ignorance in general, we'd all end up in the "clink" sooner or later.

If you want to make a difference without imposing any more LAW or wasting tax dollars on LE goons, have a bumper sticker custom made to read " put away your phone and drive your car B4 you kill someone jackass".

This may have more positive effect than another reason (LAW) for the govt. to be involved in your life.

Getting out of her car, approaching and cussing out police.  Obviously, she was angry.  What was the reason for her to get out of the car?  Was she done talking and pursuing a plan B?  If you got into say a minor accident with this broad and she got out of car raging mad and was swearing and cussing at you, wouldn't you react a little differently than if it was a nice person, say an Iranian businessman in a suit and he coolly steps back to the car with you and you both exchange papers?  Of course you would act differently.  Correct?

Are you against helmet laws for motorcyclists?  Seat belts?  There is nothing people would have to comply with.  It would be already done by the manufacturers.  One adjustment and 10,000 lives saved every 4 years.  How many lives have helmet laws saved?  Seat belts?
