Broken H&R
« on: August 31, 2012, 05:42:43 PM »
Well. . . . after a lot a years, and a lot of
game for the freezer, and varmints put
away, my old Topper 88 finally sat down
on me. :'(
I was looking it over getting ready for
the fall and winter, and the transfer
bar/ striker fell out of it. I've seen in
the F.A.Q.'s where it happened to others,
and saw the Brownell's package where
the member had ordered a replacement
part. I didn't have a current Brownell's
catalog, so I looked on their site to see
if they still listed one( I think the post
on the FAQ is from 2007) and didn't see
one. Do any of yall that mess with these
on a regular basis know if Brownell's still
carry internals for H&R/NEF'S ?
I would imagine GPC has them, but I
don't think they'll be there until Tuesday.

Any info from anywhere?
Thanks!

Common occurence with NEF/H&Rs. Just check MidwayUSA, they don't have them either. I use to carry a spare under the butt plate along with a pin that I made out of a drill bit that helped in with installation of the new one.

I've had that happen to me too.
Hard to believe NEF can't make a transfer bar that won't break.
I'm glad I bought an early one, pre-transfer bar!

I like the idea about the spare and the pin stored in the stock though.

thanks for the replies.

this is the oldest hr/nef i have,
it was bought used over 25 years
ago, and i have no idea how many
rounds have been through it since
i bought it. it may have had some
abuse by the original owner- who
can say?
i think i've got my 50.00 out of it
a long time ago, so i don't mind
spending a little on it, i just wish
it hadn't pooped right now at the
start of fall-winter season.
it's one of the case-hardened old
h&r's that i like, and it locked up
tight like a safe door, and the latch
button didn't rattle like the newer ones.

is there something i might have accidentally
done to break this, or is there something i
might do to prevent this from happening
again?

You might try this guy if Numrich doesn't have what you want in stock:

I've never had one break (knock on wood). One thing I don't do: I don't dry fire Toppers and Pardners. But that may not have anything to do with my good luck in this regard.

thanks!
i saw that, but i've not tried any
mail-order places yet on account
of the holiday and all.
i did go earlier to one of the few
local gun shops left, but they don't
have parts anymore, and i guess the
smith retired or passed. i'd dropped
off a gun for a friend a few years back,
and he wasn't too well then.
i'm sure i'll come up with something.
if worse came to worse, i guess i'd weld
and re-shape the hammer, and eliminate
the bar, but that's too much work when
i can get the right stuff to fix it correctly.

and you're right- i don't dry-fire any of my
firearms and have snap caps for all of them
if need be.

thank you for thinking of me!

i'm sorry, i don't have any way to
post pics off of this borrowed
computer i've been using.
the piece that failed is the
striker/lifter doo-dad that lifts
up on cocking the hammer, and
covers the rear face of the firing
pin, and if you ease pressure off
the trigger, it slips back down into
the receiver recess. there is a photo
in the handi f.a.q.'s about this same
repair, and a replacement part with
a brownell's package in the background.
that is what made me post about brownell's
originally, but i've since found they
don't have this. my brownell's catalog
is an old one, and the g.p.c. catalog i
have is too. i'm sure g.p.c. has one,
and i'm gonna call them tues., but if
you have an extra to sell, i'll gladly
buy it.
                             thanks!

ain't got a part yet.
it's not a desperate situation, i have
another topper to use, it's that this
one that's out of service is my oldest
and most favorite. the thing locks up
like a bank vault, and the release lever
has zero slack and doesn't rattle around
like the newer ones.
mr. froghunter is supposed to be sending
me one, he's had some difficulty finding it.
again, not an urgent deal, i'm good to hunt.

thank you everyone for the courtesy and consideration!

I have what I think is an older style t-bar that may work for ya, it looks different than modern t-bars, it's on the bottom in the pic.

that looks like the former one-piece
doo-dad that became a two-piece.

Here is what Numrich has:

You may have to take a file to it to make it work....
