Handi's and deer season

In the up coming deer deer seasons what are you going to use? Since our general season runs from Nov 3 to Jan 20th here in the Great State Of Texas, I am going to use a 22 K Hornet,25-06,22-250,243,45-70 (maybe) and a 30br if I get it finished in time. The bag limit here is 5 whitetails of which 2 are antlered bucks so I am going to use a different caliber for each one.

My 30-30a ejector handi hands down. Need to work on some others and probobly wont have the time. 160 ftx relods will be the ticket

Funny you started this thread when you did.  Yesterday my wife came down into the basement and found me staring at 7 or 8 handis laying on the bench.  She asked "what the heck" I was doing.  I told her I was trying to figure out what order I was going to shoot 5 or 6 deer this season.  She shook her head and mumbled something inaudible as she walked away. :D

So... in this order, subject to change pending more handis before season.  35 Remington, 357 max, 45-70, 35 whelen, 30-30  If I should get my 500 S&W before then it will be inserted.

A great guy from West Texas made me a .356/.358, and another one from Washington made me a shortie .38-55.  I'll be using those.

i too have been having this dilemma. so many ta choose from, but i think i've settled on the 270 for this year. I used the 308 last year fot 2 deer and the huntsman for 4 more. shot 10 dove yesterday and archery starts next saturday here in NC. Man i love this time of year!

I won't make it back in time for deer season, but I think the 6.5 Grendel will get used on coyotes early this next year. ;) If I happen to find my way onto some hogs, then the .356 Win will get used. :)

Thompson-Center .50 muzzleloader and .45 Colt H and R Carbine ( I should have bought a boatload of 'em when I had the chance) and maybe a .35 Remington short. Indiana has made crossbows legal for everyone. Prior to this they were only legal for handicapped hunters. A friend who has been a dedicated bow hunter for 15 years bought one and said he is way more accurate with the scoped crossbow the first time he shot it then he ever thought of being with a bow.  It will be interesting to see how many people try them.

My old Topper 30-30 first!  Then I'll have to use my lightwt 7-08 for the next.  After then I would have to drop back to the Win M70 ftrwt '06 as that hasn't been bloodied yet.  It's it great to know you have another good Handi back-up no matter which we choose first!  44 Man

For my stand hunting probably my 500 AM, my 444 pm. The grandson will use the 30/30. If I do a little walking during the day my BC, because it is my only rifle without a scope and I have to have good light to use it. I have a chance at 3 deer, that will be as many as I can eat in a season. If the grandson gets one , and he usually does, we will split 2 & 2 with our families & will take us both through most of the winter.
I am concerned  for our deer and turkey population here in Missouri, the hatch this year was good, and most does I see are trailing twins, with the drought so bad and so wide spread, I am worried about the food supply through the winter. We have a few farmers already feeding hay. The rain outside right now from Isaac is the first real rain since April here, we got just over 2", how much that helps remains to be seen. Best of luck.

I'll be using the 9.3x62 Superlight for deer, and maybe 376 Steyr for elk if I hunt em.

I've got a whole bunch of Handi's that I haven't killed a deer with.  But since I've got to learn to shoot left handed I'm going to start with my 45 Colt that I can practice with in my basement shooting rubber bullets.
 
I'll also get either the 25-06 or 280 ready... maybe both.   :-\
 
AND!  I'll be working on the 50-140!   ;D   Maybe... just maybe!   :P

My youngest boy will be using his/MY 7x57 as always.
I will use my 45/70 as always and if I can get it up & running in time maybe my new 50-140!!!
All I need is some bullets and the time to work with it.
I have about two months so maybe?

Big year of firsts for me.  As tobster noted this is the first year for crossbow in IN.  This will be my first archery season which begins Oct. 1.  After that firearms will be my first time hunting deer with a rifle, my H&R 357 Max.  Next up the 50 cal Sidekick comes out for muzzleloader.  The year ends with a new this year final week doe only firearm season which I will use my H&R 44 mag, which ends January 6 I believe.  I can now hunt deer in Indiana for a quarter of the year! :)


Indiana bag limits are 1 buck per season and 1 doe for archery (this is the simple version).  Bonus doe tags are allocated by county, the county I hunt in has 8 bonus doe tags this year.  Several of the surrounding counties are also 8 bonus doe tags this year.


About 10 years ago I bought a life time hunting and fishing license (the state doesn't offer them anymore) which includes all state licenses, tags and fees for hunting or fishing.  The only thing I have to buy are any federal stamps as applicable.  My deer limit this year is 1 buck and 9 does in the county I hunt in.  In theory if you include the 2 surrounding counties the limit is 1 buck and 25 does.


If I get a shot at a trophy I'll take it, but that's not likely.  On the farm I hunt I usually see several small or midsize bucks, the big ones are rare.  More likely a good season will be 3 to 5 young small does to fill the freezer.

I hope to start with the 38-55 this year. And the short light 7-08 will be along for the brush walks and such.... (the sights on the 38-55 are not brush friendly for walking)

nonono Pete!  You practice with rubber bullets and hunt with real ones!   ::)   If you hunted with rubbers the does wouldn't get pregnant!   :P   Bad for the herd don't cha know...  ;D

My Deer season (Moose) opened the first of September.  We are leaving on the 10th for a five day hunt down off the Denali Highway.  I will be looking for Grizzly and Wolves, don't care to shoot a Moose, too much work.

Going to go with my 20 guage Tracker II this year on a smaller creek bottom property and the land owner insists I use a slug gun due to adjacent cattle and a couple farm houses, so I don't have a problem with that.
Lots of game in that creekbottom and some big bucks, so what ever makes the man happy!

Reminds me of my grandfather when I was little... He used to like to tell us "Whats the best place to shoot a Moose?" First time we thought it was a quiz... (We where about 10) We answered, behind the shoulder or in the neck... He would say, "NOPE in the back of a pick up truck!" Moose are too big to drag anywhere... Ha... that was alot of years ago... Our state dropped the minimum caliber requirement for primitive firearms to 35 caliber this year, so I'll be toting my new .357 Handi that I picked up in the classifieds.  I haven't fooled around with any Max brass yet, but I got her stacking my cast 357 Mag bullets up pretty tight at 100 yards, which will be my max range with this little sweetie.  My go-to gun for regular season is a 6mm Rem, but I may just have to keep the .357 out until I take one with it.

Remains to be seen.  If my buddy comes through and I get to hunt his land, my 280.  If I'm stuck on gubbermint land again, it will have to be my Tracker 20 ga., no rifles allowed.

My maxi shoots both to just about the same POI inside 100 yards and they're equally accurate.  I don't think you can go wrong with either.  My maxi gets a walk in the park almost every day, so she's gonna sit out deer season and let her cooped up buddies have some fun.
