25-06 trajectory
« on: September 02, 2012, 12:24:21 PM »
I was doing some field work today after spending a morning at the range.  I cronyed my 25-06 loads.  110gr Nosler Accubond, Retumbo powder, with an average just over 3200fps.  I have been zeroing the scopes at 200 yards.  I came home and worked up the ballistics on the computer.  If I move my zero out to 300 yards ,my high point is only 3.70in at 175 yards.  That's still within an 8 inch circle.  Then out at the farther range i'm still with that circle on out to just over 350 yards.  That's my point blank range.

Working with the 25-06 is new to me.  I've only really got to working on it this summer.

Hey Sourdough... I know that you are an experienced dude... but when working on big game load trajectories I like to leave a margin for "human error"... in centerfires I work with a 6" Killzone (3" radius)... this leaves less room for error on the short/long ends of the PBR... with very little holdunder at your range of "maximum height" and very little holdover at your MPBR, you can accurately "CENTER" the round through the lungs... for you .25/06 with 110 grain NAB's it is in the neighborhood of;
Maximum PBR:
315 yd
Maximum PBR Zero:
269 yd
Range of Maximum Height:
153 yd
Energy at Maximum PBR:
1550.1 ft•lbs

The .25/06 is a very nice caliber in a long range game taker... coyote/deer/pronghorn sized game, watch out!

I'll be shooting Caribou and Wolves mostly.  18" kill zone on Caribou and 12 to 14" on Wolves.  So I figure 8" is a good measure.  I have been working with a 6" radius, but decided to expand it.  I remove as much human error as possible, for shots over 300 yards.  I use a rest, range finder, and handloaded ammo just for long range.  If I don't feel confident of the shot I don't take it.  I use the RCBS swivel shooting platform, and I set it up in a blind.  I set up on or near a Caribou trail where the animals are concentrated due to topography.  Caribou are always walking past, and Wolves follow the Caribou.  After snow fall I mount a rest on the back of my snowmachine.  I don't go to the extreme like my partner.  He uses a lock down type rest and a remote trigger.

For Fox and Coyote I use a .223.  When we leave Monday I will take a Weatherby .338/378, Handi 30-06, Handi 25-06, and a Handi Ultra .223.  This trip I plan on using the 25-06, and the .223.  The Weatherby only comes out if I see a BIG MOOSE (I'm talking a monster Moose) or a Grizzly.  The 30-06 is strictly a back up in the event I brake the Weatherby or the 25-06.  Since we are going to be 40 miles from the highway, leaving the spare gun in the truck is not an option.
