shooting the 30-06 uc today, thats a sweet shooting gun, this is a gun you can definately shoot one handed off the bench, loaded up some 220 rn at 2400 with 50 grains imr 4350. this one has great potential.

200gr Nosler partitons on top of 56gr RL22 work good from my Ultracomp.  ;) The day I shot this group, the guy next to me complained about the muzzle blast, he was shootin a braked 338WM, prolly just jealous of my groups!  ;D

Every time i shot it i was getting looks from people ;D ;D. They kept looking trying to figure out what i was shooting

One of our local ranges won't allow ported guns at all. They're way too loud and most folks don't want to shoot near them.

The range I was shooting at has baffles between shooting stations, braked guns aren't allowed on any other shooting station, the nice thing about the UC is the brake can be removed and a thread protector installed to shoot unbraked.  8)

We have so many people up here shooting large calibers with brakes that no one notices my little 30-06 UC.  When I get out the Weatherby, or Norm gets out his .50BMG, they step back.  .50 BMGs are getting quite populer up here.  It is not uncommon to see one or two each time I go to the range. 

Been shooting my 30-06 Ultra Comp all summer.  Took the old Handi out last Monday or Tuesday.  First shot reminded me it does have some recoil, unlike the UC.  Called my gunsmith this morning, asked about a brake on my .338 hunting rifle.  He said no problem, bring it over this afternoon and he will take care of it while I wait.  He will even let me watch.  WOW.  This from a pipefitter.  That darned Ruger .338 the one with the boat paddle stock, I'm tired of getting beat every time I shoot it.  I wear muffs when hunting anyway so noise is not an issue.

I have a 16.75" 30-06 and get the same "what the heck are you shooting" looks.....the day we cut it off and crowned it my buddy and I shot it in an indoor range.  The first shot people stopped shooting the second shot they came over to see what we were shooting....we left after that.

sorry to hijack. but have a question about two things that were said on here.

1. I'm having a brake made for my 30-06 that will screw on and off. what thread should I use and do I need it done on a lathe or can I do it properly with a hand die?

2. DK mentions he has a 16.75" barrel does this affect speed(fps) or accuracy? I know 16 is legal and mine with a brake installed would be about 18-19" since its removable.

Speed yes accuracy not noticeably.... mine is actual slightly more accurate, probably because there is less barrel to whip around.  I haven't chronographed mine but I doubt it made the bullets faster.

Make sure your barrel is at least 16" with the brake off.  The job your talking about is a lathe project for sure.... if the threads aren't cut straight your brake won't be straight on the barrel and you might send a bullet through the wrong part of the brake your first time shooting it.

+1 that; you want the brake completely concentric with the bore, NOT with just the outside of the barrel. You want to equalize the exit gases and pressure all the way around that projectile. This means that you might also want to tune up the crown while its being done.

This may be a silly question.  Is it more cost effective to have your barrel ported than to have it threaded and installing a brake?  If so, what advantages do a muzzle brake have over a ported barrel besides the ability to install a silencer on the threaded barrel?  Is it possible to port your own barrel properly with a drill press properly?

Hadn't thought of that ncloader that's a good question. the reason for the break is I would like to be able to shoot any weight bullet in my H&R and the 180gr bullets are giving me hell with recoil and muzzle flip. figured a break with expansion holes only on the top 25% of the brake would help slightly with recoil but more importantly keep muzzle flip minimized. If I cut the barrel definitely will recrown it. was looking into that for my mosin nagant just now. They have dies with bore pilots similar to the hand crowning kits from midway and brownells. was just curious if that could be done. would never attempt it without a guide. as always thank you everyone for being so kind and helpful.

oh and forgot to mention. I was referring to a drop in speed. I know there's a sweet spot for barrels but was wondering how many fps I might lose per inch? That would come off the number of any handloads I made correct? for instance stock barrel length say you have 2000fps with a hand load. you cut 4 inches off at -25fps for a loss of 100fps. you look into a hotter load to compensate. so you would need a 2100fps load to maintain the original speed. correct?

Dont even entertain the thought of porting your own barrel with a drill press and a 'guide' unless what you really want is a tomato stake.
IMHO, the reduction via porting in felt recoil in a 30-06 shooting 180s is so slight as to not be worth it, though it will look snotty. There are a bunch of factors involved in 'felt recoil'. Research them before making a decision.

Longhorn, you have the right idea.  You will normally loose between 25 and 35 fps per inch of barrel cut off.  You can get into quite a discussion about what length delivers the best 'usable' velocity versis the 'handiness' of the barrel length. 
Ncloader: Ports will deliver well on cutting down the muzzle rise but are not as effective as a muzzle brake at reducing recoil.  No, I don't think I would try drilling my own ports!  They are cut into the barrel at an angle and if you didn't get everything just the same from side to side, it could get interesting.  My friend Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port uses an electracal discharge technology to leave a completely clean inside surface that won't foul or damage bullets passing through.  I know Marlin had a problem with that on that 45-70 then came out with with the drilled ports.  They are also a trapizoidal shape that is supposed to maximize the 'jet' effect of the ports.  Ken would be happy to do your barrel and I feel the fee is reasonable for a very professional job.  He cut down and ported my old Marlin .35 rem a while back and it is a super soft shooting gun!  Don't know if it would be any better with a MB or not. 44 Man
