I observed something strange.....
« on: September 02, 2012, 02:16:11 PM »
I spend most of my time on other forums, regarding reloading, hunting , trading stuff. I know names and ages of the guys I talk to, swap with, share tips and reload data etc. I know where they are, what they like to hunt, and what they hunt with.

I looked around here and found....... nothing. Sex maybe, no names, no ages, no idea where they are from. I know a couple from other sites, but mostly, nothing. Now, I know that if the government wants that information they have it any time, so being secretive has nothing to do with the feds or leo's, it is just applicable to others here. It is your info, you can do what you will....... kinda like wearing a burka, huh??

It occurs to me also that those tactics are inherent in fertilizer stirrers, people who just love to bask in the smell. Or in people who initiate action so they can watch the reaction of others.  ??? Watchers...... know what I mean?

TWOSHOOTER. I'm almost 65 yrs old, been reloading since the 6th grade. I've cast thousands of bullets over the years from various 30 cal thru 4570s, + various wts of 38s - 45s. Favorite squirrel gun is a dbl bbl 410 that was my Dads. Fav deer rifle varies, if I'm over an open field my 94 winny  3030 w scope and cast bullets, in the woods or brush my H&R Shikari 4570 w cast bullets. I live near Ft Knox Ky.

Some folks here I'd like to know better, others I know more than I want to. I have a habit of saying what I think, sometimes thats good, other times not. I don't play well with those who continually cut down America, Christians, Jews, Israel, or our military, especially when they seem to support our enemies. I also don't play well with those claiming to be Christians while  supporting those who promote killing babies and gay marriage.

I like hunting, fishing, camping, casting, reloading, all the shooting sports, college bball, and boxing. Is this kinda what you were referring to?? Charlie.  ;D ;D

My name is Steve. Will be 60 this coming Feburary. Have hunted, loved guns and shooting, fished and camped since I was old enough to do it. Started reloading in the mid 70's. Have cast my share of bullets. I love hot pistol rounds in a rifle and think a rifle and pistol in the same caliber is way cool. I have zero use for the liberals that in my opinion are destroying this country. They and the people that support them are breathing up good air someone else could be breathing. I will be nice as long as I'm not pushed into not being nice and am definately not politically correct.

It does appear that some are ashamed of where they are from.

Other than that, I mention my interests on other forums, esp. those I moderate, not on this political forum. If you look around the hunting/weapon forums on GBO you will find plenty of that from several members you see here. Of course some on this political forum pretty much stay here and have limited hunting/shooting sport interests, more so with the Libs, but a few of them have those interests.

I'm Rob.  Be 48 in January.  Have always loved hunting, fishing and shooting.  Now that my kids are grown I'm just getting back to doing the things I love and collecting and shooting.  I came to GB because I grew up shooting single shots and have become a Handi-holic.  I'm about to start hand loading and if I really like it will get a press.

I'm a Christian and a patriot.  I served 15 years and saw first hand what other countries are like.  I love our country and believe its the best out there, missteps and all.  My stepfather left me a legacy to fulfill.  "Men, lead your families.  Live with honor and dignity.  Live for the Lord and love Him with all your heart."

I love my God, my family and my country.  I'm a sucker for anyone under 10 and my grandkids know Pappa is a pushover.  As I type this I'm watching Barbie instead of the game because of a curly headed four year old who smiles and melts me.

I'm from Arkansas and came back here to raise my kids after we got out.
God Bless Our Troops!

Re: Powderman. Yup. Thats the idea. My name is Timothy, I will be 60 in November. I live  in south central Missouri. I was born on the farm where I still live, on part of it. I was the last of 5 children, the first born in the family after we got electric power, no indoor plumbing until I was 17. I was the first in my family to go to college. I farmed, was a lineman, and worked in a pipe mfg plant until the SHTF in the early 80's. I then finished school and have worked for the Dept of Mental Health going on 26 years as a casemanager.
Early in life I would have said I was Christian, I do not now. I would now say I am agnostic. Life brings some to believe, and moves others along another path. I understand the value and utility in religion, but in order to benefit from it you must be able to believe, which I can no longer do. I do not try to convince anyone to give up what they believe in, but I cannot allow them to use articles of "faith" as part of an argument. I see a lot of fear, hate, and paranoia preached on both sides, most of which is neither justified nor beneficial to anyone. It is a lot easier to be angry with people you never have to actually meet, to look them in the eye, see their children. That being said, there are chasms that are simply a bridge too far, they cannot be crossed, and we must accept that.
I also have hunted since I was 8, reloaded since I was 16, and cast bullets and sinkers now for about 35 years. I first came to this site through acquaintances on the H&R forums, they are an extraordinarily nice bunch of people. They can be opinionated without being judgemental, and are great about sharing information. I was just wandering around and wound up here. It seemed that an inordinate number of threads were started by very few people, with little background to suggest why, or with whom or what I was observing. This does help me get a better grasp of that, and I thank you. Timothy.

The information that I live in North Pole, and my sex,  was on my listing along with my avitar.  Sometime in nthe last few years it disappeared.

Rog Hunter, North Pole Alaska.  I reload, and shoot long distance.  I am a certified shooting instructor and teach kids at the Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association.  I have been an Alaska Hunter Safety instructor.  I'm retired so I hunt and fish almost all the time.  I spend the winters in Florida, where it's not 50 below weeks on end.  I drive a Ford F-350 duelly diesel Pick-up, a Jeep, and a Mazda Miata.  Sometimes the wife lets me drive her RX-8.  I used to be a private pilot, but I scared myself out of that hobby.  Took up safer things.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My name is Bob and i live in WNY in the village of Middleport. 15 miles from Lake Ontario. Just turned 66 in July. I think i started shooting when i was 9 or 10. I have always been facinated with firearms. Summers i would stay with my grandparents in PA. Gramps was probably the one that started me in shooting. He owned an old double barreled 12 ga. A 222 and a 22. 2 big hay fields behind his house. If i wasn't shooting woodchucks off his back porch with the 222 we were out by his barn shooting black birds with the shotgun. For some reason gramps didn't think the birds should nest in his barn. At that time the people threw their garbage in the creek. Gramps and i would wander along the creek bank shooting the junk that floated by. Kept the old boy broke all summer buying 22 shells for me to shoot up.
I think i have killed 5 or 6 deer but was never a big deer hunter. My passion was rabbit hunting. At one time i run 7 beagles. Spent every spare minute i had in the brush with the dogs.
Most of my life i have done assembly work. Retired 4 years ago. I no longer can hunt. Sold most of my guns. Have arthritis in about every joint in my body. Doctor called me Friday and said a good chance i have lupus. Have to go for more blood work to confirm it. Most mornings i can hardly walk.
Kind of a long post but i think now you have my whole life history.

And that's all anyone really needs to know! I really don't need or want to know any more about the posters than what comes out in their posts. If I find I really want to know about you or your family, or your past, I'll send ya a PM.. I can't see any reason to bother the whole board with that stuff. And in a PM I/you can say what you want without getting the rest of the bunch needlessly fired up.

So, if you have a desperate need to "know more about me" send a PM.....I might tell ya my life story, I might not respond at all, or I might tell ya to get stuffed!

With identity theft being a real concern in this day and age one can't be too careful about what personal information one post for the entire world to see.

I'm not overly concerned about the Government, I figure they have or can get all the info they want on me at any time.  I am however concerned about the scum of the world who would love to use my good name/credit history to open a few accounts in my name or even drain my meager bank accounts.

My name is Brett (no fake screen name)
I'm 50ish ( I will not give out my exact age or birth date for security reasons)
I was born and raised in the North East.
I currently live near Charlotte, NC (again, for security reasons I will not give any more info. than that.)
I'm married with one daughter.
I started boating, fishing and shooting when I was just a wee lad.
I do not hunt, shoot, fish or paddle nearly as much as I would like to.
My trade count is 6/6 good on this web site.

No problem, I like to hear of others lifestyles, or what they do.
I'm soon to be 55 live in farm land bout 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. Have worked on a dairy farm, then heavy construction, and now for a natural gas company. I wished I could have served our country, but at the time I didn't get led there. I'm very thankful to those that have.
Married, have two wonderful sons. I'm a caregiver to my wife of 36 years when I'm not at work. She had a unexpected brain hemorrhage at the age of 48. It was a huge life changer. Sometimes still it brings tears to my eyes, but I'm still thankful to still have her. I have kept in pretty good shape most of my life, mainly it helps make my job easier, I feel better, and hopefully helps me to keep my wife at home for as long as possible.
I love the outdoors. Love hunting, shooting, and fishing. Enjoy going to a camp with family or friends. Its not about the hunting so much anymore. Its more about spending time with family and friends. I do relaod. I used to find it kinda fun, now I do it because I like to shoot, mainly hand guns. I only have a few rifles, mainly for varmints, deer and bear hunting.  I enjoy watching the Pirates (even though they stink) and Steelers. I like to read magazines, books, and my Bible.
I'm about the only person at my work location that gets along with everybody. Some of you may find that surprising but its true. I know I sound sarcastic at times with some of my posts, but it mostly stems from just releasing my frustrations from the direction I see our country going. I believe in absolute truth, and that morality is a facet of absolute truth. I don't worry about my self. I'm concerned about the hardships my Sons, and my grandchildren will may have to endure from the direction we are going.

Stands..deep breath.. Turns bright red.. Hi, my name is Jeff. I'm 41, a self employed plumber near Charlotte, N.C. * Dad put me on one shoulder and a shotgun over the other as he'd take off through the snow in upstate N.Y, we'd kick the brush for pheasants and when the ice in his beard got too thick we'd trudge home and he'd let me attempt to clean the High Standard Flite King 16 while we watched early 70's sitcoms. By the time I was 6 or 7 he had me carrying a daisy 99 champion and on to .22's, shotguns and muzzleloaders. I lived and breathed this stuff. 20 years just slipped by as I emphasized my livelyhood and family but when I got on GBO's site I found everything I loved as a kid(and still now) and it kinda felt like a good place to settle in for awhile.  Maybe get back to basics after I finish reminiscing. Nice to meet ya'll. Jeff

P.A. that's funny right there!

T.S. I'm like Brett in that I use no pseudonym, and I too am in my early fifties.  Most of my life I was more of a shooter and plinker than a hunter, with the exception being dove.  We had lots of dove back in the 70s and I loved the fact that I could shoot a lot and usually limit out any time I went.  There were no deer to speak of where I grew up.  I matured late I guess and didn't have the patience for squirrel, or the presence of mind for quail or rabbit.  Dad tried, but I'd just as soon bum around in the woods aimlessly back then as to try to hunt something.  Being an only child I did spend lots of time exploring and adventuring (read: getting lost in the woods).  However when I grew up, opportunities for making a living were few and far between out "in the sticks" so I moved into the suburbs decades ago.  Aside from an opportunity for a dove hunt here and there, and a turkey hunt or two there wasn't much hunting in my life.  I got into reloading via my 256 win mag Contender when factory ammo dried up in the 80s.  After that I started adding barrels and playing with wildcat calibers a bunch.

In the last few years I've had less time for shooting and reloading, but found that I missed being in the woods.  I figured that an adult can't get away with just bumming around in the woods without an excuse, and since I don't fancy myself a bird watcher I took up deer hunting on public land.  That's about the cheapest way into hunting if you live in Texas.  There are a few public dove leases within 20 minutes of my house, and I get together with a half dozen coworkers each November for a half week of camping, deer hunting, tossing washers and telling lies.  Other than that, I'm just waiting for retirement so I can have time to enjoy more of the many things that interest me.

I understand the fear of identity theft, it is a real problem, I neither want nor need specific information that would endanger that in any way. It is helpful in discussing and debating issues to have information about the others in the discussion, in order to use cultural icons, analogies, examples to explain myself, that are familiar to them , so that we have common definitions and reference points. If this is a place to engage in an exchange of ideas, even opposing ones , in a rational manner that is fine. If I have inadvertently blundered into some one's, or some group's personal paranoid support group, I will apologize and go elsewhere. I do not come to these forums for the politics, and most of the people I have met are excellent. It takes a certain leap of faith to send a check for hundreds of dollars to a complete stranger, which I have done several times here without one single glitch or reason to complain. That says a lot for the quality of the inhabitants. But... business is business, and politics is war by other means.

Looks like we are mostly pretty close in age, race, cultural background demographics, at least this group of posters. There is a great deal more age spread with the shooters, I have seen. Despite what one poster said, I do believe it makes a difference, a big difference, in your personal story and what you believe, what age you are, your roots and surroundings. If you live in or near a metropolitan area you have different concerns than I in a rural area, regarding taxes, crime, services etc. If you are young and healthy you probably view retirement planning, pension benefits and medical care differently than I , whose situation is largely already carved in stone. If you are devoutly religious, you have different priorities than I whom am not.
The point is, if I can understand your situation, needs, and what is important to you, and you -I, then we can agree on areas of overlap and consensus points. There may be many things we can agree on, possibly for wildly different reasons. The other option is to simply say that you are a bad and evil person because you do not see things as I do. Once we do that, the only thing to do is watch the obituary notices to see when to schedule the party.

I use the small local bank, I never use credit cards etc unless I am on trips etc, which is rare. I had a charge that came in once from overseas and the girl at the bank showed the manager immediately who said "hell, he rarely leaves the county, let alone the country" and they called me to see where I was at and denied the charge. I guess that is a side benefit of poverty, you can only steal from those that have. The only reason I have a card is because in an emergency you cant rent a car or motel room without one. Cash works in most places and is not traceable electronically, my own little paranoia.

A name, a gender,  and a location tells me nothing about who somebody is. Interests are obvious from the posts.

Here's an anecdote from my personal experience about sharing identity: Back during the CB radio craze I knew a cop that kept a little book of handles and all the information he could glean about the identity of the people on the radio. I looked it over and knew a lot of those people. Not trouble makers, decent family folks for the most part. Their mere presence as CB hobbyists made them the object of what amounts to an investigation.

Fast forward to today and you have people losing jobs, work, promotions, etc because of what they put on Facebook and in various social media venues, like this one, for instance.
