Encore rifle barrels in pistol calibers
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:15:29 AM »
I would like to get a 357 mag barrel for my encore.  I am also considering other pistol calibers.

From the looks of things this is going to be a custom job.  I am looking to keep this as inexpensive as possible.  I am new to Encores, so not sure I know all the barrel makers.  But have read about a few on here.  I would like to have open sights on the barrel as well and don't see this option with the makers I know of.  The open sights are not a must have, but would like.

What makers tend to have the best value?
What makers offer open sights?

Thanks.

MGM is at the top of my list.  Just wanted to make sure I was not missing out on an unknown source.

JD Jones at SSK Industries makes the best of the best.  He is pricey and will put whatever kind of iron sights you want on your barrel.  I have had him make 8 barrels for me in contender and encore.  Sold two on Ebay for about $50 less than a new one should you want to sell it down the road.  SSK barrels have a cult like following.  I sure drank the cool aid!  :)

You may want to discuss how you want the chamber cut  for a .357 Mag or even a Max to see if you want it same as pistol with forcing cone or more like rifle with prescribed jump to rifling. If you reload, you may want to go with rifle chamber to get more consistent accuracy, velocity etc.  Bullets that you will typically use may drive your decision as well.   Just my 0.02.

MGM is my choice too. I had them build me a 20" barrel chambered for the 45 LC. I've owned many Contenders and Encores but this is the most accurate I've had. Also if you load with a good magnum powder like H110, 296 or Lilgun the speed of a pistol round will increase because of the longer barrel and no cylinder gap. A 357 mag, 44 Mag or hot loaded 45 LC from an Encore, with the proper bullet, will make a great hunting round for whitetail and such if your shots are 150 yards or less.
