I have mixed feelings on the immigration issue. My real beef is with the Asian invasion that is over running my former home LA. But hey, like I've said before, "It's always all about the money" for some one other than me anyway.
When I was TAD'd at NAB Coronado, I would take the Amtrack San Diegan to LA whenever I got the chance. (Now I can go from almost white in the winter to a reddish brown when I spend alot of time in the sun as was the case at that time.) The border patrol would do "routine" checks of the passengers on the train (funny, there was no big outcry about it then).
As luck would have it, I would ALWAYS be very rudely questioned, in Spanish, by the stereo typical "redneck" who spoke rather descent Spanish (almost better than my own; I was a little jealous I can say). I would reciprocate his hard ass attitude IN SPANISH as well and even try to tongue twist him.
Inevitably the question "do you speak English" was asked, and I'd reply in a mocking southern accent "Well yeah. Just what country do yall think you're in anyway".
Well 'ol "Hoss" would get steamed up yelling "Well if you speak English why don't you just say so, why do you have to be a smart ass"
I'd reply "you spoke to me in Spanish first and I thought you were a "wetback" so I answered in a way I figured you'd understand, why do you have to be a hard ass?"
This scenario played itself out about four or five times that I can remember during the seven months I was at NAB. And it was always the same ending; talk with the supervisor, showing the military ID, the usual "we're very sorry, thanks for your service....BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! And in my mind I was thinking sieg heil to you and kiss my BROWN AMERICAN tail.
I guess I could have been nicer. But in those days I rarely walked off (or on) that train sober
