« on: September 04, 2012, 03:59:19 AM »
obtained at 204 earlier this year, heavy fluted barrel with varmiter forend and stock, from the bench it tends to shoot in a consistent circle around the bull 12, 5 and 8 o'clock thought it was my hand loads but its to consistent with any of my recipes, rifle came with a 80's model tasco 6-24 power scope, any ideas

A lot of 204 Rugers won't shoot the longer heavy bullets, 32-33gr seem to be best in the 1:12" twist, some shoot 40gr, some won't, if you're shooting 40gr you might want to switch to a lighter bullet. I'd check the mounting first tho, make sure the scope rail is mounted solid per the FAQs, replace the scope with a known good scope, read the Handi Basics sticky to make sure you've covered all the basics of shooting a Handi, shooting without the forend on will tell you if the forend fit is the problem, while the forend is off, check the barrel for looseness, lots of things to check before returning it to H&R for repair.

More likely the other issues I noted, particularly the mounting and the scope itself.

My fluted barrel  Handi loved the Hornady 204 rounds, I forget the weight, since I'm out at the moment. Inch groups were easy using a 6.5x20x50 Simmons Whitetail Classic scope.......

have you tried reducing the loads? are they key holing in the target?  :-\

26 & 32 gr bullets are pretty lite...they might be a little erratic from too much speed/rotation.  :o

FWIW, I stopped trashing scopes, I pull the reticule cell/wires and tie a shoestring on in a loop. I can hang it around my neck and with the loop the right length for the eye relief I have a quick view one hand rig rather than binos; it works better for me with my eyes and glasses.
