Need advice on contender carbine stock options !
« on: February 08, 2004, 10:31:01 AM »
I've got two great contender frames with perfect triggers and I wanted to put together a carbine in 17 HMR so I ordered the contender stock and foreend to put on one of them.  Surprise, the comb heigth is VERY low and I need something higher to will help me with scope alignment.  It looks like the encore stocks are built up in the comb area to help with scope alignment but I understand that one of those won't fit my contender frame.  If I want to keep my contender frame and not buy an encore, what can I do?  Does any body offer a different stock with a higher comb that will fit my contender?  I also think I read that the G2 stocks won't fit contenders. Is that correct?  ANy ideas would be appreciated? Thanks - Eddie

You could try looking to a custom stock by Bullberry or VVCG, I have seen several thumbhole styles on Ebay.  Depends on what you wnat to spend. The pictures I have seen of some stocks from both BB and VVCG are just downright too good looking to take outdoors. But they are laminates and should be quite tough. The cheap way out would be to get a lace on cheekpiece, or even cheaper yet, tape on a rag or towel.

Go to gunstocksinc.com  I just bought a semi finished walnut stock from them that is shaped and sized just like the Encore, but was inletted for an old style Contender.  Price was $40 for the semi finished buttstock.  I have heard that they now have laminated stocks too.  The stock I bought is not on there web site, I e-mailed them and was told that they made the stock as a standard item.
