well yu mite post in the trappin forum and get lots of good info. my fav trap was always the no 2 victor coilspring.lots of jaw spread, big pan, adjustable pan tension and just a  heavy built trap. the 1 1/2 will work tho if you got good swivels and use a drag. yotes are funny.  some will stand there and sum will fight like there ass is on fire.

I havent been trapping in years, but when I did put out coyote sets, I usually made a mixed set of #2 coil springs and similarly sized long spring traps.  I never had enough of the coil springs to make as many sets as I wanted to, so adding in the long spring traps helped out.  A long spring wont hold a coyote long, but while they're hoppin and jumpin around, they have a really good chance of stepping in one of the other traps in the set.  I also remember having some #2 coil spring traps that had 4 springs on them rather than the standard 2, but I'm not sure what brand they were or where i got em...

Ny #2 coilspring can be 4 coiled. Many companies are now producing their traps with longer spring pins,so that all you have to do is add the extra springs.

when trapping with the no 2 coilspring make sure yu attache it firmly with good wire and use swivels and very heavy s hooks if you extend the chain.
a couple years ago i lost a brand new one on a set, i had extended the chain about 1ft as i sometimes do with a heavy s hook and a piece of chain. whatever got in it, wrapped it around a grapevine on the ground and opened up the s hook and was gone the next morning trap and all. we had a heavy rain that nite so i could not really tell what it was.the extension chain was still there but trap and varmint was gone. it was a coyote set but i cant see a 30lb yote doin that.i firmly believe that a square foot catch with a no 2 victor would hold at least a 80 lb animal maybe bigger if your terminal tackle would hold up.

I've got a mix of 1 3/4 and #2 coils most all are 4 coiled and base plated. I've held coyotes in good strong 1 1/2 coils but also had them eat a stock 1 3/4 coil. I sometime think it's more important how you stake and swivel a trap than the trap it self. Personally I stay away from using wire in dry land sets favoring chain or cable. But like every thing we talk about here you will get a 100 ways to do things. You need to sort out information and use what works in your conditions with the traap you choose. We'll do our best to point you in the right direction.

There are some traps for sale in the classifieds.  Long spring type.

That got me wondering, why doesn't anyone use them for coyotes?   ???

Some still use the #3 longspring for coyotes but most trappers find the coilspring traps easier to set and bed.

Thanks Boggy!  I can understand that!   ;D

As I said here long ago, I haven't done any trapping since I was a kid (pre driving age) trapping muskrats for 35 - 50 cents a pelt as I remember.   ::)

But, we have got a lot of coyotes down on the farm I hunt and I imagine the couple we shoot every year doesn't put a dent in the population.  I worry about our fawn crop!   :(  And the dozen of new #3's he has seem to be around $50 or so less then retail...  :-\

Then there's the coons and our turkeys...  ::)
