we use to boil 'em in lye water, and then in
oakbark/acorn water.

You will have a hard time finding lye or sani flush to degrease traps.
Some wash in a degreaser on new traps, I wash them in sopy water and wipe dry,to remove any oils and grease.
I use speed dip--but I mix with coleman fuel--not gasoline. I also thin it down more than the 4 to 1 it says. I also continue to stir the mixture as I dip.

Tough to get a solid answer on trap prep. Guys argue the dye wax/ speed dip thing to the death. I personally have some traps that get dyed and waxed because they always have. I have others that get dipped because they always have. So I end up doing some of both every fall. I will say that most all my water traps are now dipped. the ones that get dyed and waxed are 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 coils from my old fox lines. I have #2s and 1 3/4 coyote traps that are dipped. So there you go, your going to find guys who swear by both or swear at both.
