I hate to say it, yet I'm kind of looking forward to it.....
« on: September 05, 2012, 12:08:21 PM »
The garden for 2012 is slowly coming to an end.  Green beans, onions and berries have fulfilled their purpose and their produce is stored for the winter.  I've ate enough cukes and zuchs to last me for quite a while.

There are still carrots to pull, some peppers to pluck, winter squash to cut and a few more tomatoes to pick and can...probably into "red gravy".  But the freezer is packed, the shelves are full and though we still have more to put up in one way or another... things are certainly slowing down.

The humidity is less and the night time temps are finally getting down into the 60's.  A few leaves are turning and soon I will be pulling out all the garden plants, tilling and planting some garlic for next year.

I'm tired of the daily work, the worrying about the plants, the weather and the pests, but kind of sad that soon it will be done til next spring.

Off the wall question, but why do you replant garlic?  I've dug up a bunch of clumps from old houseplaces and have it growing in enough otherwise-unused places that I don't replant.  Does the cold kill it?

Gardening is more than an opportunity for me to work the dirt and reap the harvest, although those are enjoyable.  It's some of my "alone with God" time, and also brings back memories from times past, long ago with siblings and parents, when times were simpler and the world was a kinder place.

I agree. I'm done gardening for the year.  Its time to move on to fall activities.  There are some tomatoes and peppers left to pick, and maybe a few handfuls of green beans, but I'm coasting now.  This is usually the time of year I start spreading wood chips, leaves, manure and the like on the garden.  As soon as the last few crops are out, I bury it all with a moldboard plow and forget about it till next spring.

To me, the garden is a summer activity - it keeps me busy and keeps me outside throughout the summer months, when my motivation to do so is usually at an all time low.  I'm a spring/fall kinda guy.  Love getting out in the field during planting season, and i love the cool crisp fall weather, and all the hunting fun that comes with it.  Gardening gets me through the summer...and fills the pantry with goodies to put in my fall favorite - venison chili.
