Mother of Dem convention star Castro called Alamo defenders 'drunks,' 'crooks'  Published September 05, 2012
FoxNews.com
  •    Sept. 4, 2012: San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and his mother, Maria del Rosario Castro, at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. (AP/Fox News)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  The Hispanic Texas mayor whose keynote speech wowed the Democratic National Convention crowd Wednesday night draws political inspiration from his mother – who was a member of a radical civil rights movement and who reportedly thinks the truth behind the Battle of the Alamo is that Texans swiped Mexico’s land.

Maria del Rosario Castro, the mother of San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, said in 2010 that she grew up being told the battle was “glorious,” only to learn the so-called heroes were really “a bunch of drunks and crooks and slaveholding imperialists who conquered land that didn’t belong to them.”

“But as a little girl I got the message -- we were losers,” she told The New York Times Magazine. “I can truly say that I hate that place and everything it stands for.”
The Alamo, then a sprawling mission for missionaries and American Indian converts, was attacked in February 1836 by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Though historical accounts vary, Texans, including famous frontiersman Davy Crockett, fought back for 13 days only to surrender, on March 6.

Maria del Rosario Castro also was a member of the La Raza Unida, a radical movement that defended the civil rights of Mexican-Americans in Texas.
The 37-year-old Hispanic mayor told New York Times Magazine that upon being elected mayor in 2009 he promptly hung in his private office a 1971 La Raza Unida City Council campaign poster that featured his mother.

Neither Castro nor his mother returned calls seeking comment.
Castro’s twin brother, Joaquin, is running for a Texas congressional seat this year.

Sam Houston was a drunk. No doubt that among that many there was a crook or two. Doesn't really mean anything or change anything. Sam Houston was the first president of Texas and stayed drunk a good part of the time he was in office. It was a different time.

Sure; and Generalissimo Antonio lopez De Santa Anna was big, brave hero..with the values Billy Graham...even as he had their bugler sound the "Deguelo" ...and escaped dressed as a woman.

It is also interesting to note what honorable gentlemen his officers were..  Study the history..and then tell me where the  following phrase came from..

She's a piece of lying trash!
Show me anywhere that "crooks and drunks",, given the chance to get out scott free would rather stay and fight when they knew that the outcome would most likely be their death if they stayed.
If she and her sons think mexico is such a great and honorable place, then why didn't she raise her litter down there in her own hell hole of a country?

I was taught Texas History starting in the first grade back in 1956 through 1968. Before Mexico made the deal with Stephen F. Austin for white settlers (and blacks), Mexico had been able to settle less than 3,000 settlers in some 400 years of CLAIMING Texas, due to the Comanche and the Apaches who hated Mexico. Austin was able to bring in over 30,000 settlers in under 3 years. Mexico provide nothing and taxed the daylights out of them. Thus the call for independence.
The men at the Alamo knew that they would most likely fall, but were buying time for Houston to organize.
Standing in the plaza of the Alamo is a pedestal (or there used to be) with Colonel William Barrett Travis's LAST letter sent out for reinforcements. His last words in that letter were that he would never surrender, and he did not.
There were families in the Alamo that were allowed to leave, as the pending doom was upon all who fought there. Some were Mexican, and some stayed, but the stories told by the ones whom left did not tell of drunks or crooks. When Travis drew the line in the dirt, Jim Bowie asked that his cot be carried across the line to the fight side. He was so sick he couldn't stand.
He was in a room when they were overran, and Mexicans said there were two fired flintlock pistols, and a knife layin by the cot, and several dead Mexican soldiers in the room. Drunks, and crooks? Hardly!

Amerians did "swipe" Texas from Mexico.  How can you think differently?  Just like we took the entirety of the lower 48.  It wasn't America before it was seized.  The fact that Mexico wasn't getting Texas settled with enough people in 400 years, does not mean it was ours for the taking.  Good grief.

In regards to the Alamo, there were 7 men that surrendered. They demanded to see Santa Anna to plead for their life. As the term Deguello means, no quarter, they were immediately killed by gun fire. The bodies of all of the defenders were piled in the front of the Alamo and burned. Several years later, Seguin came and gathered the bones from the burnt pile, placed them in a wood box along with a Texan musket. It's buried some where between Main Plaza and the Alamo, probably under a building now, if anything remains. Read the letter in regards to the fall of the Alamo:
http://www.thealamo.org/battle/letter-Goodrich.php

For those that have never heard Deguello which was played repeatedly before the attack. It's a final salute and honor to those about to die.

In regards to Castros mom, a lot of Hispanics here believe that Texas should be part of Mexico. But ignorance runs deep for the old hispanic folks as well as lack of education. The issue with the Texans revolt was because the Mexican Gov't had agreed to let the Texans live under the Mexican Constitution. After the Texans were becoming more powerful, the Mexican Gov't withdrew the parts in regards to freedom of religion and the right to own firearms. The Texans were to be Catholic only and all Texans had to turn in their firearms. The problem with the firearms was that the Indian attacks were still going on and the Mexican Gov't, just surviving it's own war, didn't have the troops or man power to deal with the Indians. The Texans saw it as an opportunity to be their own self governed State, a feeling that still exists today. But despite Castros mom being ignorant to history, there are MANY Mexican heroes in Texas history. I can give you list if you like.

Lorenzo de Zavala was the first vice president
of the Republic of Texas.
he was born in mexico and was a prominent
mexican statesman.
he gave all that up to be a Texan , which he knew
was more important to him than to stay in mexico
living the good life with santa anna.
he was also one of the signers of the Texas declaration
of independence.
many more like him.

but none ran around hollering "viva mexico"

Read your history Mike. Where did Mexico get Texas? Could they have "swiped it" from the Indians. Oh wait! There weren't any Mexicans until the Spaniards showed up. Only Indians. That's right! Mexicans are a mixture of Spaniard and South American Indian. Hybrids so to speak. ::)

So I would assume that the (white) Spanish and their Mexicans heirs (read that as white Spaniards, and Indian-Spanish mixed bloods) were entitled to seize Mexico from the AmerIndians?

Mexico was populated by an estimated 24 million people before the Spaniards came.  I guess there weren't enough people settled there, so it justified the Spaniards taking that land.

Good grief indeed!

Look into the original meaning of the phrase "Gone to Texas"....
Texas was a refuge for some of America's less-than-desirable citizenry.
Davy and the boys surrendering is based on a controversial diary from a Mexican soldier and still hasn't been proven to be authentic.

And YES, I'm a Texan!!!!

The only thing I totally disagree with is that those men surrendered...Bowie did have quite a reputation and Travis had left his wife...Bowie's wife(Ursula as I recall) the Bowie children and her parents all died from some scourge. smallpox, cholera ..or some such thing.  Her father was an Important factor in the Mexican govt in San Antonio de Bexar.
The Travis separation may well have been one of mutual agreement..at best, an uncomfortable match to start with.

We (Europeans) came over here and took land away from whoever else owned it, I can agree with that...Specious condemnation at best.  Since the dawn of history, men in the form of tribes and nations have been seizing one another's land.  This has inexoribly, taken place all over the globe..eastern AND western hemisphere.  In the case of Mama Castro, the pot should not be calling the stove black.

Her ancesters conquered Mexico and Hernando de Soto was one of the most ruthless killers of all time.....A familiar quote by those who know partial history.
As stated, different times, don't judge them now...Some values are timeless..

DEE..  Gave you all a short, accurate synopsis of Texas history.  I was born and presently live in the north but I have spent several years, both military and civilian in Texas.  As with any other "homeland"..and to Texans it is their "homeland"..it was bought and paid for with the blood, sweat & tears of heroes past..both European & Indian (Comanches..perhaps the finest light cavalry ever) and the "Texians" who fought at the Alamo..were a great expression of the grand American "melting pot".  The Texians were made up of virtually all races, religions and political convictions we find here today.

So often today, we find folks (usually liberals) who are trying to tear down genuine heroes of the past.  They find any character flaw possible, magnify it ..and then call the man ..a rat!  Again I say..only one sinless man ever walked this earth!

I echo Ranger 99  ...don't use the term "we" too freely..   ..But if you wish to apply to yourself only...then have at it.

flintlock,
Well, that's like saying "without folks from England, France, Russia, Germany, etc....there would be no USA.
Actually, in my family, we're taught that TEXAS has existed since the Creation. Adam and Eve ate the fruit and got kicked out, then in the mid 1820's we were allowed back in on the condition that we "clean the place up."
