.38 Special in Handi?
« on: September 06, 2012, 06:24:50 AM »
That's it. How does the Handi .357 shoot .38s? Thinking of getting another barrel. Also, anyone ever heard of a 9mm Luger Handi? That would be a nice buddy for my Ruger OM convertible in 9mm.

My 357 has been reamed to 357 Max. It shoots 38's very well. I shoot a 148 grain HBWC over 3.0 grains of Bullseye. It is accurate enough to regularly knock off chipmunks at 25 yards.

Mine shoots the 38's into about an inch at 25 yards.  Accuracy goes south much farther than that...357's are good for an inch and a half at 100....357 max is cloverleaf at 100.

I'd love to hear how that came to be. How's it shoot? With all the free 9mm and .223 brass laying around the range I'm thinking a 9mm Handi would be a good cheap plinking gun for a reloader like me.

All I shoot are .38's out of my .357 barrel.  Quite happy with it, use the same ammo, that I used for my PPC gun when I was shooting competition.  Have quite a bit of it left over, plus I can easily load for it with all the brass I have. ;D

Get a .357 barrel, you won't regret it.  I feel it's one of the must have barrels for a Handi, along with the 30-30, and 45-70.

I'm with you on the 9mm, would buy a barrel in that caliber in a minute.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I haven't tried any 38's in my 357 Max yet but in my old 357 Mag (now Pete's) it used to group 1 1/4" at 75 yards with factory 148 grain 38 wadcutters using open sights.

I bought the 9mm handi here.  Has a 223 ejector and is a stub barrel.  I have only shot it at 25 yards with one load and a 2.5x scope but it is a minute of gopher gun at that range.  I really got it to shoot 147 gr 9mm in.  I travel and work too much to shoot enough but I have toys piled up if that time comes when I'm at home.

Mine shoots the 38spl better than the mag within ranges of 30-40 yards. Past that not so much.

I still have some work to do with mine, but I did have a promising load that was shooting around an inch at 50 yards, it was a Lee cast 185 gr RN that was seated long, and 3.6 gr of Unique. Very quiet also, may be subsonic, I dont have a  chrony.
