Is it possible to build a 1911 from scratch?
« on: February 08, 2004, 11:39:05 AM »
Just curious, with all the available aftermarket parts for the 1911, is it possible to just build my own? Bear in mind, I am not a machinist, I have no experience as a machinist, nor do I know or have access to a machinist, or his tools. If such an endeavor were possible, I'd likely be limited to stock/off the shelf parts. That said, can it be done?

Been there done that, used a Essex frame and a Ithaca Colt slide and started from there with heavy buffer spring etc,it was ok and ugly.Next one was a GI that Bob Chow redid and it was neat but ugly,so I had in polished and deep blued and it wore some, this CGP is a matted stainless gray and I like it better than any 1911 I have ever owned and I have three now.

Take a look at Brownell's catalog or web site. They sell every part you need. You have to have an FFL to order the frame. I've built several and am currently ordering a matched Les Baer frame and slide for my next project.

There are issues with fitting the slide to a frame that you may never overcome without years of trial and error.  Unless this idea is a hobby, the work is better left to a competent gunsmith.

The neat thing about the 1911 is that there are so many after-market parts on the market that the parts that are left over after replacement will build another 1911.  Easily.
