Stewart... the place was "crawling" with pigs that Sunday evening and I had a single shot Handi-rifle in 223 caliber to "equal" the odds in favor of the pigs. What an evening. What an experience. I am not used to getting my adrenaline "up" any more when pig hunting. That'll do it though. It is good for this Old Man to practice the "fast feet shuffle". On Dec 1st I had a very large grey spotted boar come thru on a a trail trotting fast and I had my scoped .308. He was at 10 ft or less when I saw him and turned to fire from the hip. I missed him but he turned down the hill and was at 60ft before I could throw the bolt again. One shot was all I got off and he could have had me had he wanted to. My son had spooked him from the creek and he was leaving town not hunting hunters. I wished I had any of my lever guns or my Super Blackhawk on me. The scope was useless at that range and me using a right handed bolt action left handed was a handicap to

I think what you did qualified as a defensive rifle.
You made a loud noise with the rifle and a clear miss was the best result that turned the hog from you.
Had you had open sights on the rifle or a 2-7X33 or other low power scope you could have snaped the rifle to your shoulder and taken as real shot that would have hit the hog. Now hitting the hog could have made him mad and had him charge to stop you from hurting him.
If the 308 was not the rifle for the terrain then carry the rifle you have that best suits your terrain.

This post is about a month old not since last of 2012, I read because was
just looking at the gunsite ruger for defense hog - son will do
the first shot with a 223 probably new winchester hog ammo
(son is a little on light side, is less recoil for him)
and I'll be there with something with no scope,
primarily for close range/like hog defense.

But I read this whole post, and thought would let you see article I read on farmer eaten
by his hogs- he was old tho and who knows maybe something health wise happen &
he was frail and the hogs probably used to him bringing food,
so hungry hungry when saw him just there, but still, here is:

Years ago this used to happen a lot. A fellow would have a heart attack and they'd gobble him up. When I was a kid the neighbor lady called and wanted me to check on her husband that didn't come back from slopping the hogs. I found him dead in the cow feed trough. Evidently he crawled up in it so the hogs couldn't get to him.

I've also got a bunch of big raccoons cleaning out my corn every night and have been planning to bring along my 22LR to thin them out a bit. Would be great to be able to take any hogs that show up as well.

By the way, I didn't mean to hijack the thread

.... for hog defense I would go with a 20 Gauge Short Barreled Semi-Auto Shotgun with a Red Dot sight and 2 or 3 slugs (like the Winchester Supreme 3" 260 Grain Partition Gold Sabot) followed by buckshot.

The 20 Gauge is plenty big enough to get the job done, should be lighter than a 12 Gauge and have less recoil, which will allow for more controled follow-up shots. Also, nothing is faster than a semi-auto for follow-up shots and in my opinion, a red dot sight simply can not be beat for close up quick acquisition and follow-up shots on moving targets.

Like someone else said... you're not hunting here, you're defending your but.

Here is my hog "hunting" rig. It's a Browining BAR in 7mm-08 with a red dot sight and loaded with Hornady 154Gr Round Nose bullets. I've got 4+ one in the tube and like I said earlier, the red dot is excellent for quick acquisition and follow-up shots.

Hey cwlongshot . . . yes, they have been discontinued. I haven't been able to find them anywhere. These were great bullets .... the "hammer of thor" best describes their performance in the field. I hate it that they have been discontinued. I'm looking for a replacement load. I'll probably revert back to my old standby.. the Speer 145gr HotCor sptizer. (not the boat tail).
