.22 LR Target Ammo ???
« on: September 10, 2012, 11:53:12 AM »
I've been given 1500 Rd's of Winchester Western .22 LR Target ammo. It is the older Western Ammo Box. These are bricks of 500 each. I guess tamate they are from the late 50's to mid 60's. All the rounds I've checked are in good shape no outer corrosion, some lead heads with a little oxidation on them but rubs off. Beings they are target ammo I believe it a 25 Yard bullet. Was thinking of using them on ground squirrels distance 25-40 Yard's. Looking for input on this.   Thanks

Likely sub-sonic, and they will exhibit less wind drift at 100yds (and more)than HV's as has been repeatedly proven by smallbore marksmen for decades. Ive shot comparable ammo recently at 200yd silhouettes to good effect. You should get great groups at 50 to 100yd. if you and the gun are up to it.

If it's the standard shaped bullet and loaded to the standard velocity, they should shoot well to 200 yds and beyond.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

that stuff could have more collector value than shooter value.  22 lr target velocity is/was the standard velocity loading of the day, and still is.  I think some advertize standard velocity loads to 1080'/sec with the subsonics to 1070'/sec.  Both are very accurate.
How good are they - that old rn slug will hit out to 300 yds.  One of our members used standard velocity loads on a defrosted turkey wrapped in 3 layers of duct tape over the plastic wrapper.  Once they got the range they found those slugs penetrated on through the turkey.  I don't think your ground squirrels stand a chance......
