The Feds Can't Catch the Cartels' Cocaine-Filled SubmarinesBy Adam Clark Estes | The Atlantic Wire – 21 hrs ago. The Feds Can't Catch the Cartels' Cocaine-Filled SubmarinesEnlarge Photo     The Feds Can't Catch the Cartels' …    With three-quarters of potential cocaine shipments sliding under their noses, United States authorities are having a hard time keeping up with the Latin American drug cartels. Part of the problem, a new report in The New York Times says, is the fact that the famously daring and elusive drug-running submarines aren't just operating in the Pacific Ocean any more. These diesel-powered vessels have taken the Caribbean by storm, and the technology powering them is getting more sophisticated.

Although they captured 129 tons of cocaine on its way to the U.S. last year, the Coast Guard thinks that close to 500 tons could now be making it through. "My staff watches multi-ton loads go by," Rear Adm. Charles D. Michel told The Times. Part of the problem is a new class of fully submersible craft, three of which have been seized in recent weeks. (Before, the subs were only semi-submersible, depending on a snorkel to bring in air for the engine.) These new drug-running subs are capable of carrying up to ten tons of cocaine at a time and can run from Ecuador to Los Angeles without coming up for air. On top of it all, officials are also worried that these subs could be used by terrorists.

Of course, running drugs in subs is nothing new. So-called narco-subs first started making headlines about ten years ago when cartels, mostly Colombian at that point in time, started switching from the surface-level speedboat technique to using rudimentary fiberglass-and-wood vessels that could zoom under the surface. U.S. authorities called the first captured submarine -- a 49-foot-long vessel carrying four men, an AK47 and three tons of cocaine -- Bigfoot because they weren't even sure it existed until they spotted it. Since then the subs have only grown more sophisticated and more frequent, so U.S. authorities are working overtime. Michel says that drug interdictions are already up 50 percent in 2012. Success, as we mentioned before, is spotty at best.

Success rates aside, the Feds know that they're dealing with a serious challenge. One commander working with a 600-person task force in Key West said that cocaine-filled subs "are the Super Bowl of counter narcotics." He told The Times, "When you hear one is moving you say 'Wow. Game on.'"

Yeah......the war on drugs is an abject failure. All it appears to have done is to make it so lucrative that the cartels can afford sophisticated equipment. :-\

As sexy as the narco subs are, the vast majority of narcotics are coming into the US via mules across the border or inside shipping containers along with regular commerce.

Think it's time to change our strategy on the "War on Drugs" yet?

So if you don't have a termination date on a law enforcement issue, you just give up.  Bank robbers, killers, rapists and all sorts of other malfactors should embrace that policy.

Don't know about give up but certainly a change in strategy and priorities is needed. All the drug war is doing now is flushing BIG tax dollars down a rat hole, costing lives, ruining lives and providing LEOs, court staff, and prison guards employment. This "war" has cost us more money with less result than anything I can think of in my lifetime.

Absolutely. Every drug runner  caught in the act should get a bullet in the head then have the body dumped accross the Southern border. Repeat the  process as needed. A good start. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

PM, why are you so quick to kill? I have a hard time equating that with Christian beliefs that you so strongly profess.

guzzi. I wouldn't expect you to understand. Killing is the only way to stop these poison peddlers. Todays libbys and pantywetter judges slap em on the wrist, give em safe passage home so they can keep coming back, the cycle only ends in death.

Used to be a mean dog come around often. Fought and hurt my dog, growled at wife and my kids. Running it off did nothing. I don't mind killing cats but I really hate killing a dog, but I did. That stopped it. I see no difference between these poison peddlers and a mean or mad dog, or any other vicious animal. They serve no purpose in any civilized society.
I can't understand how you can support killing babies and gay marriage either and claim to be a Christian so I guess we are even. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

The only problem with your strawman argument is that FBI stats show that crime is DOWN in all those areas. However the drug situation remains unchanged or increasing. With more money involved, and more lives destroyed by the drug trade.

Good try though! ;D

You folks are under the impression that the war on drugs is about stopping the flow. It is all about price support. Good old supply and demand economics at work. Those most likely to profit from the illicit sale of drugs, are at the core of "the war".

Do you really think they are filling rail cars with hundred dollar bills and shipping them to Columbia? BIG banks are laundering the cash and making a tidy profit too. Do you think anybody believes that a strip club is collecting thousands of tip dollars every night? Is that jr. high drop out detailing cars to the tune of  thousand bucks a day? All cash business? Washing windows on the corner for hundreds a day?

Drugs are bad for you, they ruin lives. Find me someone who does not know this. I defy you to find this person.

Your efforts are better spent taking care of your own than worrying that some fed program isn't doing the job. hell's bell's men you don't trust any other gov't program, why on earth do you think this would be the exception. ::)

Building and throwing away a "sub" with every load. What more evidence does one need to see the futility.
