Buffalo Bait
« on: September 11, 2012, 08:08:46 AM »
I got married this May.My brother in law raises Buffalo.I have some buffalo meat I'm going to  use to make my coyote/fox/bobcat bait with for this fall.Got the ingredients on the way.I'm going to  make up 3 baits, same basic recipe. Two of the baits are each going to get some additional "kickers/enhancers".I'll rotate the 3 baits through my line and see how they do.The original recipe for the bait is tried and true, tons of fur caught on it over the years.I'm thinking of calling it"Buffalo Wolf".I thought it might be a nice change up for this year, something the critters haven't smelled before.Bill
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

Yotero Bill, good to hear fm you!  That   plan of yours with the three diff baits is a good one, i use something similiar but dont use bait till freeze up.   Up till that time i just use gland or urine.  Going to be trapping  right next to the eastern Montana border come last week of Oct and first week of Nov.  . Will be in the Reeder Scranton area below Dickenson.

I'm 45 minutes from Mobridge SD in a little town called Hosmer.I'm getting to be more and more of a bait trapper for canines, baited dirthole or flat set.For baits I like mild one in early season with a muskrat gland/tonquin edge to it,then go to mink gland/sweet skunk type and for cold weather mink pushed by hot skunk.I use a perservative that they will eat unlike sodium benzoate.Never was a big fan of beaver meat or bobcat meat as a base for bait.
Got a nephew, high school kid,who is hard on the muskrats and coons with legholds. He wants to learn to catch coyotes bad. That's my goal  this fall is to teach him canine trapping. He has a bunch of permissions for a lot of sloughs, small lakes,a river and some streams with adjoining farm/ranch land. He's got lots of coyotes and a fair fox population to work with. This kid is smart and a real hard worker. When his buddies were playing video games he was building muskrat floats patterned off some I made and setting cage traps for coons in old barns. He'd rather trap than eat or sleep.I gave him a 4oz jar of Lenons Muskrat lure and he cleaned house on rats last fall.Learned pocket sets for coon/mink real quick.Bill
