I'm no fan of Jane Fonda at all, but not because of her Hanoi Jane stunt that was more for publicity than anything. Slamming her for doing it is about on par with how the American people slammed returning vets from Nam to me, many continuing to do so until the Gulf, and not finally being put to bed until 911.
Anyone who was anti Vietnam during its run had a much clearer vision to me than those who sent over 58K young American's to their deaths during it, the 20 odd thousand with permanent disabilities from it, the thousands who died later because of Nam, and those of us still waiting to die from issues cropped up that are the result of that service time.
I did my four years because I was called to duty by "my country", it just happened to be during the worst American casualty years when 78% of the Nam era servicemen died. I was far, far safer being on an aircraft carrier than the ground forces (although we lost our share too). For a very long time I have not considered it as actually serving my country. To me my country is ALL the people, not just the few who caused our involvement in Nam when many, many Americans didn't support it. I was a Hawk way back then and did my duty, but I've worn hippie era peace and fire medals every since.
