357 Maxi barrel length?????????
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:50:46 AM »
Howdy ya'll. I am new to this site but have been using it for information for about 2 years now. I am currently a active duty soldier in the US Army and for the first time since 2008 i am able to hunt this year so needless to say i am over ecstatic to do so. I am putting together a Handi in 357 max for my rifle this year..... I have been researching this rifle for years now and what time is better than now to do so..

My question i have is about chopping the factory barrel. I want to chop the barrel to 18" but my concerns is what will i loose in velocity of this round by doing so. I am a stickler for numbers on rounds and am planning on loading this round with 180 gr ball and using it for 0-150 yds mostly dense vegitation.....

I plan on mounting a nikon prostaff 2-7x32 with nikoplex reticle on the rifle..... I am overlly excited to put this rifle together and use it this year. any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

I would like maxi owners with a 18" barrel to let me know what loads and velocity they are getting with this round...   Thank you to all the members of this site you have already provided me with more information than i could ask for.....

I have a Talo Trapper in .357 Max with the 18 3/4" barrel. I'm getting 1900 fps with the Hornady 180 gr. SSP bullet over a near max load of H110. It is an honest MOA shooter, and the deer I hit with that load last year didn't complain...dropped at the shot, folded over backwards like a taco shell and never flinched.
I'm getting 2450 fps. with the 140 gr. FTX and H110, but that is seriously beyond what the bullet can handle. I'm just waiting for an armadillo to step out so I can do some "in the field testing" of that load!

From what I've read, confirmed by my own experience, there's little or nothing to gain with the pistol calibers over 16 inches.  Mine's cut to 16.5 as is my wife's.  I'm shooting the Hornady 180 gr. .358 SSP Interlock at a chronyed 2150 fps. over Lil' Gun.  It's consistent and accurate and the short rifle is a dream to carry and swing in the woods.  My .38-55 is cut to 18 inches and shoots a 213 gr. bullet at 2275 fps.  Perhaps it would get a little more with a 22 inch barrel, but I doubt the gain would outweigh the Handiness.  The same goes for my 18 inch .356/.358 running a 200 gr. bullet at 2500.  I'd cut it........... ??? Oh yeah, I guess I did :-[

Thanks for your service deerslayer.

I think the standard rule of thumb is around 50 fps velocity loss/gain per inch. If you're looking to maximize (no pun intended) your range then don't cut the barrel. If you're like me and hunt in thick woods then cut it down, it's a lot "Handier".

That being said, a 22 inch barrel on a Handi is still a compact rifle. I have an older factory 357 Max with a 22 inch barrel, it balances perfectly when holding it by the receiver and only weighs 6 lbs. As much as I like shorty rifles I'm not going to cut this one.

Mine's sighted in at 75 yards and it cloverleafs when I do my part.......which is getting more infrequent :'(

I PMed you the load data.

Tom, that rule holds true for rifle powders.......not necessarily so with pistol powders.  They'll burn completely in a short barrel.

Of course you didn't.........I sent it to the wrong guy ::)   You've got it now.

I've never tried anything heavier than 180.

I need to mention, and I forgot.  Both our Maxis are on SB2 frames.

No, I haven't hunted deer or bear with it yet.  I have had too many Handis waiting in line.

Where are y'all getting the load data from(hard copy)? I'm going to load the 180gr hp. xtp  I read some good things about it out to 150-200yds. I just reamed a new 22" barrel the other day and I have a 18.5" barrel coming in the mail the next day or so. I'll be interested in knowing how they perform, I'll cut the 22" down quick if I can.
