I have a 20G pardner slug barrel with rifled sights. Is the chamber area heavy enuff to have it drilled and tapped for a scope base?

The faq section on h&r customer service site says no, but that may only apply to non slug barrels.  i would imagine that you could because they sell slug guns with scope mounts. There may be some epoxy/solder options, but i have never tried that so i couldn't say for sure.

I had a smooth bore 20ga Pardner barrel D&T for a WGRS sight.  The gunsmith did it without commenting about the thinness of the chamber area and didn't go thru into the bore.  Maybe your barrel is thinner, but I'd ask him to do another if I wanted one.

I have a 20ga pardner barrel D&T I've also got a 20ga tracker and a 20ga tracker II that have been D&T no problems.

I have a 12 gauge tracker 2 slug gun that i epoxied scope base on and have never had any trouble with it.

My gunsmith said the 20"s were fine, the 12ga I had done he said would be too thin for a D&T so he solver soldered that one.

I have drilled a couple 20ga and have not had any problems. Staying with smaller lighter optics helps.

I have a 12 I drilled for peeps that's also been just fine.

To my mind it's not like the gun will blowup. It's that the chamber is thin and the screws do not have much "meat" to get threads into. So bolt on the popular 3x9 Variable and there is sufficient leverage to pull the screws out.

I say go ahead and do it, then epoxy the base AND screw it down. B sure to properly prep the steel so the epoxy can work. And enjoy the gun.

There is more than enough metal to d&t a 20ga barrel, even the factory does it on their Ultra-Light Slug Hunter.  I did one of my 12 ga barrels and got 4 full threads per 0.10 deep hole.  Interestingly enough, the screws on the Williams peep I installed only had about 3 threads extending below the base.  ::)
