I thought US embassies all had a marines assigned to defend them

These latest arab spring style attacks on US embassies are a bit puzzling. At least 3 have been attacked, and I haven't seen anything in the news about marines defending them. I thought all of our embassies had several marines assigned to defend them. Apparently that's not true.

Embassies have Marines, most Consulates do not. But the key is rules of engagement-I would bet everything I own they are not allowed to fire on protesters breaking into the embassy. Kinda like the Marines in Lebanon that had ammo but could not load until they were fired on. So a car bomb killed hundreds. It is insane to send troops in harms way and not let them protect themselves. May God protect us all because I am afraid this Govt. will not.

They do have Marines, however part of the problem is the Marines a relgated to the last line of defense. Civilian locals are hired to protect the outer portions which get stormed.
 
Lybia has arrested 4 of it's citizens in connection with the murder of the diplomat.
Makes me wonder what would have happened if Regean was in office. Probably something like: well I do have 200 thousand marines that would like some vacation time in Lybia.

The marines were not allowed loaded weapons per state dept. I have heard.  Sounds about right.  The weapon is heavy enough, wouldn't want them  to have carry ammo too...
