LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Three suspects are on the run after police say they likely caused an intense fire at an apartment complex in Hikes Point. The fire destroyed an entire building, leaving dozens of people homeless. Police believe the fire was caused by a meth lab explosion. It’s just another symptom of the rising meth problem in Jefferson County.

The number of meth busts are growing steadily. Already, Louisville is on pace to surpass last year’s numbers.

“This is our worst fear,” Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) said. “That it would happen in a setting where there’s a multi-family unit like this. And, they’re just very lucky that no one was killed.”

Metro Council is taking action, setting up workshops throughout the community, teaching people how to identify meth labs in their neighborhood. Flood says it’s about using your senses, not the least of which is common sense. Pay attention to odd smells and neighbors repeatedly disposing of Draino, starter fluid, lithium batteries, or fertilizer.

“Well, they’re not fertilizing anything in the apartment complex,” she explained. “Those type of things that there’s an abundance of, you need to report it to your apartment manager and you also need to report it to the LMPD and if you want to use the anonymous tip line, that’s perfect.”

If you want to know more about what to look out for and how to protect yourself and your neighborhood, visit one of the three workshops. The first will be in the Okolona area on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.M at the Okolona Christian Church. On Sept. 20, there will be a workshop at 7 p.m. at the Fairdale Library. On Sept. 25, there will be a workshop at the Southwest Government Center in the Valley Station area at 7 p.m.
