S&W Model 46
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:15:11 PM »
Has anyone ever handled one of these? I have one, an they are great .22 pistol's. It was given to me after my father passed 7 years ago. My dad never shot it, just used it as protection when out of town. It's like brand new. No, it's not for sale :) . I just wanted to share my find. They only made approx. 4000 from 1957-1966.
"Hunting and Fishing"....a deadly disease that I thank God they will never find a cure for..

Yep, ...bought one new in the early '60s ($105 IIRC).  The slide cracked early on and S&W replaced it with a slightly modified design. Since then, I have carried it many miles and put untold thousands of rounds through it. It is far from new looking but still going strong.

It is the most reliable pistol I have ever used. I have owned or been issued (ex military shooter) numerous target .22 autos including several each High Standards, Rugers, and S&Ws and none have been as reliable as the old 46. Also, the trigger is simply superb. ...one of those happy accidents that occur from time to time.

Many who have shot it have tried to buy it, some at pretty inflated prices. One even made a standing offer to trade it for any new S&W .22 made.  I've given it to my son and he is trying to wear it out now.  ...won't happen.

Only suggestion I would make is to replace the plastic grips with wood (41s fit). They are much nicer. Gil Hebards has some at decent prices.

Get out there and shoot that thing. A gun that old has got no business still looking new.
