Ruger Old Army and 45 LC and Reloading
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:22:32 PM »
Hi Guys,

I have a few ROA Revolvers and I would like to purchase all the equiptment I would need to reload and shoot the 45 LC cartridges.

I would appreciate info regarding what is the best cylinder to purchase and where.

What bullet grain weight to use and style of bullet...flat top? round nose? Where to buy them?

I don't think I will be casting them as of now....but maybe in the near future.

What type/brand of powder and recommended grains to use with the bullet?

A set of Redding dies? I have a Redding Big Boss Press.

Primers?

And anything else I would need to shoot with the conversion cylinder in my ROA'S

Thank You!
DavidGod Bless!!!

Dave, I'm not doing exactly what you are asking, but I think I can give you some thoughts.  I do load for my .45 LC Blackhawk and have an Old Army I shoot also.  I load the .45 LC Blackhawk with Goex FFFg (have tried many subs too) and a 200 gr. RNFP Dardas Cast Bullet.  Good accuracy and I shoot these in the Ruger old army also with 35gr. FFFg.  I use regular CCI Large Pistol primers in the LC loads and Starline or Winchester brass.  I have about 200 of each and notice little difference.  As for dies, I just use my Lee Deluxe Dies, but if you are a redding man, I don't think it's really critical.  I like the carbide dies, since you don't have to lube all the cases.  In the Long Colt, I use a drop tube and fill to the point I get about 1/16th inch compression.  I don't use a compression die for pistols as it isn't long range shooting.

Here's the place I buy my lead bullets:  a 1000 count box is only $85 and I rarely get more than a couple with voids or bad lube per batch.  Only thing is his lube isn't a BP specific lube like SPG, so if you will shoot a lot at a time, you might want to special order them unlubed and pan lube them yourself with SPG.  I don't believe he offers different lubes, but none was a possibility for my .45-70 bullets I purchased from him also.

Here's what they look like loaded:

Sorry almost forgot the conversion info:
These guys have the conversion base pins: http://www.beltmountain.com/ruger.htm towards the bottom
For the actual cylinders: http://www.kirstkonverter.com/rugerarmy.html
I use a light roll crimp with a Lee FCD also on all of them into the crimp slot in the bullets.

Preferr the Kirst cylinders myself, Walts a pretty decent guy.
Loads depend on what you want 160gr powder puff rounds for cowboy gaming or 255 wrist busters or something in the middle.
