What thread pattern for rifle stubs?
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:36:02 AM »
Hello all,

Is there a "standard consensus" regarding to which thread pattern a rifle stub should be threaded?  Looking at the options, 7/8-14?  3/4-16?

My idea is to get started making stubs once my replacement lathe gearing gets here, just want to be on the same page as everyone else when it comes to what to thread the barrels and stubs for.

Thanks for the advice,

I think it is a personal thing that does not have to interchange with another person's work. So I would do what I feel comfortable with. Personally I would use fine threads over coarse and make the ID of the stub as large as possible. That would make the chamber walls as thick as possible. I also would not thread the whole length of the stub. I would have a snug slip fit between the barrel and the stub, except maybe an inch that is threaded to a bigger diameter. There has to be 20 different ways to do a safe stub. So Like I said do what you feel comfortable with. I know that Larry has done a ton of them and he has changed his technique over time to make the job easier and that fits his equipment. I have personally inspected one of his barrels and he does excellent work. Hopefully Larry will weight in on this. I would take his word for it. I have not done a stub, but I do have the equipment to do it. I have a South Bend 10K lathe with about 32" between centers (4.5' bed) and a nice little end mill with a 32" X 7" table with an X axis auto feed.  I just need to gather the parts donor barrels and the needed nerve to pull the trigger.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I know what you mean about nerve.  I have a chambered 44 Mag barrel blank (~18.5") and a 12 ga shot-out handi barrel on the way, been musing if and/or how to marry them up.

One of the .223 or .243 handi barrels I have will soon become a stub for several .30 caliber rifles as well as some other... projects (12 GA FH, anyone?)

To help with the nerves thing, I would suggest making a dry run with a piece of steel bar stock.  One inch bar stock is cheap insurence.

Good luck!
