Range time with the max.
« on: September 18, 2012, 11:38:53 AM »
Laded up some 158 gr. soft point Hornady and Nosler 150 soft point, got to the range took everything out got set up went to load the gun and realised I grabed the 308 :o and it was the first time I have ever only taken one gun. As a side note has anyone ever used the Hornady or Nosler soft point for hunting and how did they do?

Been there, done that with the wrong gun, have also taken the right gun and the wrong ammo.  :-[

LOL...

I did that once myself... I so wanted to shoot my newly shortened maxi... SO, I made special arrangements, even put off a customer to another afternoon, loaded the truck... got there and opened everything up... stood there in disbelief... packed it all back and went to the pistol range and shot a couple clips from the G23 and went home... I had forgotten the ammo. ;)

I have shot the 150 Noslers, but never on game in the maxi.

I have shot most all of the 158g bullets in the maxi on deer. What I recomend is stay away from the HP bullets, ALL cup n core bullets. INCLUDING the XTP HP. At least when loaded to top velocities. Remember these bullets are designed to give expansion at 12-1300 fps in a revolver. Push them to nearly 2500 and they are bombs. ;) The WILL over expand and UNDER penetrate.

The 158SP are better, but unless your using the XTP FP bullet avoid top velocities here too. Unless you need to push the envelope and intend impact ranges to be out near 200 yards. Then top vel with a SP or even maybe that XTP HP would work well.) But loaded to say 2200fps they are good hunting bullets.

Personally, I feel the 180 is as near as perfect as you can get with this caliber in a rifle.

Good luck,

I'm pretty conservative in reloading, most of the hunting I do is well under 100 yrds. I hunt in thick swamps dwn. here in FL. sometimes some shots you can measure in feet instead of yrds.which is fine for deer but hog's is another story. I haven't chrony them yet, but was thinking that I might run them around 1400-1500 fps. I shoot mostly 180 xtp's and 180sspb.

I had something happen that's similar in a way.  Patty and I were shooting together.  We had 4 or 5 Handis laid out on a bench.  Most were black synthetic.  I reached for my .223 and Patty said "That's loaded".  I sighted on the target with a relaxed grip and squeezed....... In an instant, I thought I was in the middle of next week. :o :o :o :o :o   The rifle was the .500 S&W.

Yea, I'll bet we could all have a story or two if thought back far enough. For me, the big suprise was me and the wife were deer hunting and she shot one with my now hers 35 rem. 336 she made a good shot on it but it was not dead when we got to it and without thinking I finnished it with a one handed shot from my 20 ga. useing 3" slugs, thought it broke my hand and there was no more hunting for me that day.

I did the same thing when I was a kid about 30yrs ago. I grabbed the handi 410, soon as I went into the woods I jumped a rabbit. So I log racked the barrel dropped in a 410 shell and it slid out the barrel. I starred at the shell on the ground and looked up, the rabbit was still sittin pretty. I chambered another 410 shell and it slid out the barrel. I looked at the barrel, it was my 20ga. So I hollered at the rabbit and picked up the 2 shells then walked back home.

I went hunting one time and found I had my TC .223 with me and ammo for the .375!  I had put both in simular colored ammo boxes and looked in my gear and saw a green box and said that's fine.  It's a good thing I did have another gun with me that time.  It was not ideal but at least I was able to hunt.  Now I try to put different calibers into different colored ammo boxes.  I also have different colored cases for my rifles and that helps too.  45 colt in a black soft case, the '06 is in a brown one, 7-08 in dark green, 223 in light green, .22 in grey, and 30-30 in 'pink' camo.  Don't ask, but it was the only case I could find that was short enough at the time.  I don't like extra length flopping all over on my cases, so I want them to 'fit' the gun.  I still have an empty tan camo for another one then I'll have to figure out a new style.  Anyway it all works for sorting now.  At least when this happens to us, we learn from it and have a good story to tell also!  44 Man
