The 'Disciplined Sportsman' forum?
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:14:57 AM »
First let me say that I've been breathing air for a very long time guys, and also that I really do enjoy this chat forum thing.  You have to take recommendations with a grain of salt but that's ok.  You do the same when you get one from the guy at the trap field or the hardware store.
But I haven't found exactly the forum I'd like to spend a few evenings in, while my burning feet recouperate from a hard day in the stickers chasing after Woodcock.
How about one for the minimalists; those who repair their waders rather than buy new; those who have their Smith and Wesson tightened up rather than trade it away; those who spend enough time with one shotgun to become an expert instinctive shooter instead of scrolling through web sites looking for the next gun for their collection?  Where do you post, those of you who hunt, fish, camp, shoot clays and bullseyes, hike, and take genuine interest in wildlife; the guys who are content with one squirrel gun, one bird gun, one deer rifle and one handgun, one freshwater rod, one saltwater rod, one tent, one knife,...?  The sportsman who knows the limitations of his binoculars but would rather get out there and use them than search for a new pair that gather five percent more light.  I see you there friend, but not until I have to wade through seemingly endless posts of the sort "What gun should I get?", "What's the most durable revolver?", "How many bolt guns do you have?"  Well, you get the picture; at least those that get the picture, get the picture.  And that's who I'm looking for.   Hope to hear from you soon or from the moderator who sees the value in such a forum.
Regards.

I still have the first rifle I ever bought. And I still drag it out and shoot it from time to time. But I moved into a couple of other rifles for most of my hunting as the old standby doesn't work well with my eyes.

I still have my old boy scout pocket knife, don't use it much anymore though. I do have my old buck fixed blade I still use for game cleaning.

I recently sold or gave away all my fishing equiptment as I haven't been in many years and no plans to in the future.

I have one pair of real binoculars that I've had for many years and they are the only ones I use to hunt with. Although I have a couple of cheap ones I keep in the pocket of my truck door for occasional bird watching.

All that being said I do buy and trade lots of other stuff because I can and enjoy peddling with it. As for where are these other forums? Just look around here on GBO. You're not alone.  ;)

i belong to some others where likely topics are:

hmm, I have one tractor (1952 model) two single shot rifles/shotguns that share 5 barrels, a .22 lever gun that is 30 years old, a couple muzzle loading rifles, a Buck Hunting knife, and a surplus pilots survival knife (both of these are 25+ years old)

hmm, well I suppose some could think I have a mix of old and new.  You will not find a new chambering in my collection.  My varmit rifle is a .22 K-Hornet, the only magnums I own are a .22 magnum, and a .44 magnum.

GBO seems to have more like you are looking for, but to create another forum for this niche would likely draw away from other forums, if it had any legs at all

Hmmm... I may qualify.

1.  I still have and occasionally still use the first fishing rod I ever purchased when I was around 12 years old and I'm 50ish now.  Wore the original reel out and replaced it with a Mitchell 300 about 20 years ago.

2. Still have/use my fist shotgun.. a Mossberg  model 500 pump.  I came with two barrels - a 28" vent rib for wing shooting and an 18" slug barrel with rifle sites for deer.   My other two shotguns, a .410 and a 20ga., are H&R single shots.  No 'newfangled ' auto-loading shotguns for this old boy.

3. I own only one centerfire rifle - a single shot H&R Handi-rifle in .280 Rem.

4. I own two .22 rifles. A Ruger 10/22 and a H&R single shot.  The Ruger is at least 25 years old.

5. I sometimes carry an old S&W .38 j-frame revolver for CC.

6. My favorite knife is an old fixed bladed Russell that I bought back when I was in college 30+ years ago.

7. My family recreation boat is a 14' canoe and my fishing boat is a sit on top kayak.

8. My commuter vehicle is a 2003 PT cruiser with over 180,000 miles on it and my work/recreational vehicle is a 2001 Dodge Dakota with over 165,000 miles on it.

I like your thinking. I have one single shot 16 gauge, one single shot 357 Maximum and one 38 Special snubnose. The only "extra" guns I own are for my kids and my girlfriend. I do buy and sell guns occasionally but it's only because I'm still searching for the perfect guns for me although I've pretty much decided that I could be happy with only my 16 gauge single shot for all my hunting needs. Squirrels to moose are covered with that one gun.

Inthebeech, mods do not have the ability to create forums. Graybeard (Bill) and Matt are Administrators and they do that. Generally if there is enough support they will create a forum. So your post here is all that's needed for how to request a board. If there's not enough support then don't get discouraged. There are plenty of folks here with the same ideals you are describing. You could just start your own posts in the appropriate forums and specify you want the replies to represent a minimalist theme.
Good Luck and have a good day.

Inthebeech

I believe what your looking for is right in front of you, your looking at it different.
All you speak of is here just most can't continue to post the same on the same products
I am 59 have the first shotgun I fired at age 8,It will go to my grand-kids.I hope some day they do the same. A buck fillet knife that my high school heart bought me,
she has since gone to the great hunting sky's, the knife will go along with the shotgun
A Mitchel reel that came about age 15 don't get used much, I saltwater fish
don't want it rusted, A fishing pole that is at least 30 has been re-eyed twice gave me thrills from day one. A 35 yo 30-30
As to all the new stuff I don't really go for it, I’m content
I do like a new caliber for my contender every now and then,My reason!! just to feel it go off, most get traded, I have a 7-30 for it,it to goes to the Gran-kids. Had it from the very early days of GBO,if fact Bill spoke so much of the round I had to have it( he was right)
I like pistols they only last a short time,
25 yo 380 carry has been updated to a new 9 “but not sold”
Had snake boots for 15 plus they just passed

I guess I fit your look but I am more a reader than a poster now days

I think I fit into that category. One of the side-effects is that I'm so comfortable with my equipment that I don't much like to discuss equipment. That's where this forum fits in. I do like to keep in touch with other sportsmen, but when you  know your equipment and your methods, there's not much left to discuss on them.

Full disclosure: I did buy new waders last year after using the old ones for 21 years. The old ones were mostly repair cement and patches, and have so many micro-leaks that I can't keep them reasonably dry anymore. I still have the old ones as a backup. I also bought a new reel after losing its predecessor by dropping it overboard.

Aparently I did get through and hopefully without insulting others; this is exactly the audience I was thinking about and hoping to find.  Yes, a knife or two went to my son or friend but that was only after realizing that the Old Timer Model 33OT just couldn't be beat (except for cleaning fish which is done with an Old Hickory kitchen knife bought at a yard sale), as long as you knew how to use it, how to sharpen it, and any fleeting passion for something "different" was just boredom because small game or trout season had not opened yet.

Thank you all very much for reviving my faith.  I'll be poking about these forums to see where you guys post so I can find a true sportsman when I want to chat with one, get input or share the results of some outing.

I try to make my gear last as long as possible.  However, I see nothing wrong with owning several rifles ad handguns in various common calibers.  If everything goes to Heck in a hand basket and I find a supply of .06 or .308 or .30-.30, I can shoot it.

This would have already gone to heck on most forums.
I think of the mountain men, or early cowboys, they had one good gun, and savvy.
I may have been better off when I had one rifle, I did know exactly where the bullet went.  Now I have 2 for antelope, 2 for deer, and 3 for elk.  On the other hand I enjoy shooting, so have some that are more for fun.  "everyone" should have a single shot, a tubular magazine lever, a bolt, a DA revolver, a SA revolver (old style that loads 1, skip 1, load 4), a 12 ga. a .22 pistol, and a muzzle loader.

AS for scenarios where everying goes south, I am old with a crippled wife.  We will have to do with neighbors and friends.  I do have an inkling of what should be on top of the list if I have to leave.  A .22.

INTHEBEECH, I think what's happening is that folks like to post about and believe others want to read about things that are new or hi-tech and exciting.

My thought process is that nobody is interested in reading about me replacing the worn out tip eye on my 40 year old Diawa fishing rod.  At best they might enjoy reading about the 8# bucket mouth bass I landed with it.  I doubt I would even mention that it was caught with that 40 year old rod or that I was using a pair of $10 Wally-World sneakers for wading shoes.

Maybe we should ad more details about our tried and true equipment when we post tails about our hunting, fishing or shooting exploits.

While you might be righr Brett that 'most' would not find your short story there interesting, it is exactly what I DO find interesting, nostalgic, and beneficial to many, myself included.  To "our kind" a short paragraph about a day fishing with a forty year old outfit, patched together, is enjoyable reading.  But maybe there just aren't enough of our kind.

I went squirrel hunting last Saturday with a Winchester 69A so old, it was before serial numbers were required.  I went two for three and have two sets of legs and backstraps in the freezer.  The shot I missed worried me a bit because I really thought the let-off was perfect.  After scouting for ten minutes because I despise the thought of leaving wounded or killed game in the field and not finding it (another sign of a true sportsman), I was wondering about the gun.  After the morning's hunt I took the rifle to the range which was on the way back home and confirmed that I just simply missed; the rifle with cheap-but-good Weaver scope and all put three shots in half an inch at fifty yards.  Although it was pretty accurate when I bought it, I still took the time to glass bet the action, stone some creep out of the trigger and refinish the stock (which turned out to be the best looking wood I've ever seen).
Would most of today's "sportsmen" give my 69A a second look on any gun rack, let alone buy it and put that kind of effort in to it?  And would it be their only 22  rifle?  That's why I'm glad for the responses; I suspect everyone here, would.
