44mag twist rate
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:47:38 PM »
Does anyone know if the new talo trappers in 44mag are still 1 in 38" twist, or have they updated them to the 1 in 20"?  If not, does anyone see them changing the twist rate to match the 444 (1in20) or are they just going to stick with the 1in38?  I know that many of us love the 44mag, but I can't help but think that many more would be ordered if it were a more useful twist rate.  Please enlighten me if you believe that the 1 in 38" is the way to go for the 44, i don't know that much about ballistics, but it seems like more of a muzzle-loader twist to me.

The Talo Trapper 44mag is the standard SAAMI 1:38" twist, my latest 44mag(2011) worked fine as a 44mag and even better as a 444 Marlin!  ;D If you want a 1:20" twist, buy a 444 Marlin and load it down to 44mag velocities, then you'll also get a .430" barrel instead of a .431"-.432" barrel!  ;) If you want to complain to em about something, make it about the fact that the SAAMI spec for the 44mag rifle bore is bigger than a pistol bore!  :-\

That's a good point Tim.  I remember that the 44 had some bore issues.  Have they corrected this or are they still coming off the shelf at .432"?  Have you used any of the longer, heavy bullets in your 444?

44mag barrels made near the end of rifling tool life will have tighter bores, that's why there's a tolerance range.

I've shot 355gr in my 444, 405gr will work too in the 1:20" barrel, but I haven't tried em, Marlin makes H&R barrels.

a few points on rifle twist rates to consider and research

Consider for a moment that lighter ie shorter bullets of a given bore diameter require much slower twist rates compared to the heaviest available for the same caliber.  What actually stabilizes the bullet in flight is the speed the bullet rotates at.  Faster rotation (rps [revolutions per second]) can be achieved by either increasing bullet speed, or increasing the twist rate of the rifling.  So the 1:38 twist for the .44 magnum rifle barrel is Ok because the rifle velocity of a 240 grain bullet is around 300 to maybe 450 fps faster than a revolver barrel with a twist rate of aprox.  1:20.  The 240 grain bullet has about the same rotation per second from both barrels, even though the twist rates are different.

I am still trying to learn external ballistics (bullet flight) but this seems accurate to me.

Some where around 2007 they tightened up the bores a little. I have a 2007 44 Mag and it shoots .430 bullets real well. It likes the 240 grain JSP Winchester White box.

Three shots...2 overlapped and 1 about 1" away at 50 yards. Also 1 in center bulls eye after adjustment.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Just for clarification, I have two 444 Marlin H&Rs, the factory 22" (355gr BTB load), and the rechambered 20" 44mag, here's the original range report on the 44mag and other info leading up to the octagon barrel modification to make it the Superlight I thought I was buying, there are bore specs included.
