People who frustate me at dove shoots
« on: September 22, 2012, 05:44:28 PM »

People who shoot 70 yards at a dove.
People who shoot over and beyond me and scare the birds away while I am waiting for an approproate shot.
People who shoot at birds before they get into the field.
People who yell "bird!", and thats all it is; a bird.
People who shoot at tweety birds.
People who wear orange or white shirts and then come stand near me.
Its all pretty much the same person.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Same here.  I quit hunting public land all together for the same reasons.

not to mention the SPECIAL MORON who always manages to sting someone with the outer edge of his shot pattern at 50 or 60 yards   >:(

How's that sayin' go......Birds of a feather, something or other.

There's a multitude of folks out there that should find better things to do than to attempt to hunt. Then there are newbies and beginners that just need a mentor.

I had a semi drunk shooter pepper me well once.  I was po'ed to say the least, and decided to handle it properly.  I walked over, explained what he had done, and told him to be more careful.  The second time, I walked over, pulled his shotgun from his hand, (to his surprise), and threw it end over end as far as I could, then got in my truck and left.

I don't like dove anyway.

Not sure what the birds of a feather thing means.
I enjoy mentoring folks and make a good living doing it.
Some folks are not receptive to it.

I refuse to go on a pay dove shoot so I don't get to do it much anymore.  But back in the day when dove shoots were social events among friends, you pretty much accepted that you may get "rained on."  No biggy, what fool would look up when birdshot was falling more or less streight down!?   ::)

And, when a dove would somehow make it into the field and be winging along not way high off the ground, someone would always holler "LOW BIRD!"  Shooting at a low bird was the only real sin.   ;D

I refuse to go on a pay dove shoot...

I actually prefer the pay shoots, but only when its a small private corporate event.
We will take a group of about 10-15, including 8-12 customers, to Quail Valley in Faunsdale, Al.
Costs more than a publicly advertised shoot , but is a better value than a lot of other customer entertainment events.
The food is great and there are enough doves that everyone capable of getting the limit does.
The host has been putting on dove shoots for 45 years and knows the reason we are there is business entertainment. He makes sure everyone gets a chance at the limit. He moves folks around to even out the opportunities.
We can always count on getting some business from those folks as dove season approaches, but the relationship building that happens on these outings last all year long.

I would not go to a pay shoot that was open to anyone.

The birds of a feather was a joke son....a joke.

Anytime someone goes hunting to a spot that is readily and easily accessible to the masses, at a time when the masses are out and it's a good spot, one is bound to have competition. While many of us are considerate hunters, many more are more concerned with getting their limit than steppin' on other folk's toes. Some of those, like I said before are newbies and know no better. Some just don't care. I hunt public land often, but have learned if the spot looks good and can seen from the road, you may as well look somewhere else.....especially if you are gonna hunt it on the weekend or opening day. Most of the time, if someone insists on crowdin' me or sittin' on top of me, I'll move. The quality of my hunt anymore means more than what I take home in the game bag.

I too enjoy mentoring, but do it on a volunteer basis. You are correct, some are not receptive. Most are tho, and most are appreciative.

I can handle being rained on, but when someone shoots directly toward you, at a low bird, and the pellets raise welts on bare skin, thats a little too close, and it's time for them to put down the beer and go....

Gonna hijack my own thread here, but I was talking to my dad last night. Lately he has been telling me stories of events that happened to him or his family in the 30's, 40's and 50's. He's 82, doesn't hunt but owned a dairy farm in Montgomery from early 50's until 1962. His dad had a dairy farm also, and loved to shoot doves and be the life of the party. My day had 50 acres of brown top millet one year when no one around planted anything, across the road was a pond, so the dove just came and stayed. Dad told my grandfather to come shoot the doves. Grandfather walks into the cafe one morning and invites everyone there to come shoot that afternoon. Don't know how many people were there (probably about two dozen), but Dad said they brought back 970 doves that day, some they didn't bother to look for.  Must have been cleaning them til the next morning. I didn't get interested in hunting until about 1971, so I missed out on all that.

Pow Pow, that sounds like the videos I've seen of Argentina lately.  I'm sure I've never seen that many doves in one day....

many moons ago, i hunted a real long
fencerow, with folks lined down both
sides facing opposite ways backs against
the fencerow.

quote from the guy behind me on the
opposite side:
" how ya sposta tell which ones are the
doves when they're flyin' ?" :(
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I quit going on public land when some drunk shot and hit my buddy.  He's 6'4" 235 and it knocked him down.  Fortunately it was cold that morning and he had on a coat plus his hunting vest......nothing penetrated.

I still hunt public property but on the days when most people are at work. I work 3 pm to 11pm so there arn't alot of people there in the morning and you can usually get a whole field to yourself.

But Me and my dad went one step farther and made our own dove fields so if we can't get a field pretty much to ourselves we go back to his place.
