>Veto spurs Doyle recall supporters
>
>
>By Matt Conn
>Marshfield News-Herald
>Supporters of an effort to recall Gov. Jim Doyle say they have more
>ammunition after some legislators' recent failure to override his veto on
>a concealed weapons bill.
>
>Since Doyle has served as governor for more than the required year,
>qualified electors can enter a petition for a recall at any time,
>according to Wisconsin statutes.
>
>The Senate voted to override Doyle's veto of the concealed weapons bill,
>SB 214, 23-10, but the Assembly failed to override by one vote, 65-34.
>
>"If you've got that many people supporting a bill that's already legal in
>(45) other states, including Minnesota, Iowa, and Michigan, which
>basically surround Marshfield, this governor is completely out of touch
>with people," said Rolf Lindgren, a former Libertarian Party leader who
>heads recalldoyle.com.
>
>But other people, like Donald Farina, 37, of Phillips aren't so sure
>about a recall based on one bill. Farina supported the right to carry a
>concealed weapon, but said he understood Doyle's position.
>
>"As far as I'm concerned, he's doing his job the right way," Farina said.
>"How are you going to handle that? That's a very tough decision to have
>to make. He means well to protect Wisconsin."
>David Klein, 39, of Athens wasn't so understanding. He became a signature
>director in Lindgren's recall effort after Doyle vetoed the bill. In
>frustration, Klein simply typed "recall doyle" into an Internet search engine.
>
>"They can go back to 130 years or whatever, but we're also in the state
>that brought forth (Jeffrey) Dahmer and Ed Gein and those type of people,
>too," Klein said. "Doyle, what does he really care about?"
>The Rev. T. Michael Schelble of St. Mary Catholic Church in Auburndale
>vehemently opposed the concealed weapons bill, saying as a former
>Chippewa Valley hospital chaplain he'd seen his share of gun accidents.
>The idea of a Doyle recall is preposterous, he said.
>
>"They're out of their minds," Schelble said. "This is absolutely
>ridiculous. We need a concealed weapons bill like we need a hole in our
>heads."
>Wisconsin statutes establish a 60-day time period to collect 25 percent
>of the voter signatures in the last gubernatorial election.
>
>That's not enough time to collect 443,837 signatures, Lindgren said. He
>challenged the logistics in a Nov. 24 letter to the Wisconsin State
>Elections board, requesting an official opinion on whether the board
>would enforce the statute. Lindgren deemed the statute counter to the
>state constitution's Article XIII, Section 12, which allows further laws
>to facilitate the recall process but none that will hamper, restrict or
>impair the right of recall.
>
>Lindgren hasn't received a definitive reply. Until one comes, a recall
>effort will not happen.
>
>"Nobody wants to do a recall until the time-limit rules are decided
>before we start," he said. "People don't want to get behind this if they
>think there's not enough time to get the signatures."
