I see where Wolfe Publishing has done another printing of this great work.  A little pricy but not as bad as I've seen some go for...  ::)   Think I'll get a copy!   ;D   Now, anybody ever heard of Hell!  I was there! ?

It would have to be a non Keith fan to have not heard of "Hell I Was There".
Or someone young enough to have been born after he died.

It's a good thing that it's back in print. I have been recommending it to guys that are getting started in reloading.

I've heard of both, and read excerpts from both.  One of these days I'm gonna have my own copies of both books.  I really like an article I read where he and Roy Weatherby had dueling articles Roys was titled killing power, Elmer titled his Rolling Pumpkins.

I have those but how about this one"Sixgun Cartridges and Loads" written by Keith  published by Samworth Dec. 1936, very good read.  The .357 was new and the .44 mag. hadn't been thought of yet. H08

I'm only 24 but have read "Hell I was There" , and while I have not read "Sixguns" in full I have read certain chapters of the book multiple times. I also have all of his articles that he wrote for Guns and Ammo in two volumes in book form  that I highly recommend. In the back of the issues are also letters that he and Jack O'Connor wrote back and forth as well as his correspondence with Truman Fowler.

I have both "Sixguns" and "Sixgun Cartridges and Loads". Most of the information in the latter is in the former. I gave away my copy of "Hell I was there". I also have a letter from him. I live where he lived.

I have that one, along with Hell, I was there, the two books mentioned with his articles, and always looking for more.  And I am 32, so some of us who didn't get a chance to read his stuff when he was around, are still learning from him.  The information is as relavant today as it was back then, at least in my book.

I couldn't find it on their website. I searched for "Hell I Was There" and "Elmer Keith" with no hits.  Can you post a link?

I learned a lot from some more experienced gents when I was young.  And while I hate to say it, some of it was about staying away from some types of women.  Regarding guns, it was to quit beating my head against a wall and many answers to my questions can be found in the past, weather that is in the Gospels of St. Keith, or even older writings.  Regarding women, when I was about to enlist, I was tricked into swearing to the older Vets that I would stay away from women for a year, which was actually easier than I thought since mmost of my first year was spent in fairly intensive training so my mind was elsewhere anyway.  Part of that was to watch some of the friends I would make and the progress of their relationships.  I thought it was silly at first, but kept my word, and learned a few things.  And I'm not saying this about all women because I know there are good ones out there, but apparently you have to be careful.  I watched friends get married within a couple months of meeting a woman, ending up pregnant, and then the woman filing for divorce shortly before the kid is born or shortly after, or at the first deployment.  I admit it made me a little gun shy of women, but I also learned a lot about both people and guns, and spent my pennies on guns/training/hunting/fishing/etc, instead of child support and divorce lawyers.  Would be nice to find a good woman too someday, but for now, the guns keep me out of trouble and the learning never stops.

Ah LG me boy...   8)   Like I always said, wimmins is like guns.  You got some with big bores and some with small bores... you got redheads, blondes and brunets... you got heavy ones, light ones, loose ones and tight ones!  But they all got one thing in common!  Everyone of them will hurt you if you aren't carefull how you handle them!   ;)

And while you can't get complacent just because you have lots of experience, casual relationships do develop both skills and a gradual forming of personal preferences.  Then when you do settle on one thing, if you settle on one thing, you may decide you want an old fashioned one like your daddy had, or a flashy California style, or a finely crafted one of long lineage, or even a plain jane that nobody would bother stealing but is reliable and always gets done what you want it to do.

And don't think there's anything wrong with having more then one!  I've even heard of people using more then one at the same time!   :o  But there is nothing wrong with playing with one until you want to try something else!  Look at Lewis; 44Man!  he goes through them like nickle beer!  Including the two at once thing as I remember...   :P

Now, getting back to wimmins... Don't worry, there are some good ones out there!  At least I think there are...  :-\  I've not kept up with the actions of wimmins in the 20 to 35 age range... Men my age are invisible to wimmins of that age...   :'(  Such a shame.  I think I'm in my prime!  Well, that does take into account the modern advances in chemistry...  ::)  Why, when I was your age I... er... um... Wait!  wasn't there a book somewhere in this discussion?   ???

Yes, Sir, there was a book, and we better get back to it while we're still welcome around these here parts.   ;D

So, I had to scrounge my copies in used book stores, on Amazon, and varioius other places I kept looking til I found em.  It will be nice to be able to order new editions without having to pay some of the prices I have paid in the past.  Does anyone know if this is just "Sixguns" or if they will be doing all his books?

I borrowed Hell I Was There from the library, probably inter library loans. Enjoyable read but not something I would continually use like Ken Waters Pet Loads. Most of the Africain hunting stuff I read also came from the library. Did I mention I am cheap.

Master of Horse,
Some time ago I donated a copy of Six Guns by Keith to the GBO server fund.  Last month at an estate sale I noticed a large number of oversized bandelro holsters.  On looking in the den I saw a great many books by Robert Ruark.  Just behind them was Hell I Was There by Keith.  I bought it and got home before I really looked at it.  Looked it up and it is the 1979 first edition in great shape with a decent condition dust cover.  I went to slip off the dust over and a letter dropped out.  Letter is typed, evidently by Keith, on a Guns and Ammo Letterhead, dated 1970 and signed by Keith.  I was a little dazed for a day or so.  I listed the most outrageous (horsetraders) offer I could think of and put it in general classified here on GBO.  I even said in my offer that it was outrageous and unfair.  I wasreally hoping for another horsetrader and in a couple of weeks wih no response I withdrew the offer.  To me it was amazing that no one even offered a trade.  I guess I could sell both on Ebay but I don't really have the heart to do it.  I also lost a lot of heart when I realised that Wally Whirled and Ebay seem to have buried the last horse trade some time ago and I missed it.

Now there's another great one!  I read The old man and the boy when I was but a lad myself!

I remember that...  :-\   Your um... technique got a lot more attention then the book or letter did!  ;D ;)

I think I'm just missing one book of Keith's. I have the smaller version of Big Game Rifles and Cartridges but there was a larger version printed later and it's more scarce and  more pricey. I don't have that one.  It probably doesn't relate to modern rifles as much as the older pistol books do to modern pistols, anyway. I had dinner with him once in 1977, it was a night to remember.

A couple of years ago I picked up a copy of the larger "Big Game Rifles and Cartridges" for 50 cents at the library book sale in New Meadows, ID. I read it, decided I didn't need it, and gave it to a young shooter last summer at the Nevada Cast Bullet meeting in Winnemucca. Some things are better passed on than stashed away.

I have a copy of Hell I Was There. It's a great book & gives us a glimps into the life of an earlier America & one who contributed so much to the handgun game.
