Fired for refusing to wear "666" sticker
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:35:36 AM »
But it would be okay to drop everything, spread your prayer mat and kneel facing Mecca in middle of your shift.

November 21, 2011
A Georgia factory worker is claiming he was fired for refusing to wear a sticker celebrating how many days the plant had been accident-free.
Billy E. Hyatt is now suing his former employer for religious discrimination: He could not wear the number 666 because it's the Mark of the Beast in Revelations.
Hyatt worked on the extrusion line, making flexible packing products for Pliant Corp, which is now called Berry Plastics Corp.
"Plaintiff's sincere religious belief as a Christian is that he should not wear any depiction of the number '666' as this number is a representation of Satan and/or that this number is the 'sign of the beast,'" reads the complaint, filed in federal court. "This belief is based on Revelation 13:18 of the Holy Bible which says that '666' is the mark of the beast."
Continues the complaint: "Plaintiff['s] sincere religious belief is that to wear the number 666 would be to accept the Mark of the Beast and be condemned to hell."
The northern Georgia plant keeps a safety calendar recording the number of consecutive accident-free days, and workers then write the number on a sticker and wear it during their shift.
As the number of days crept into the 660 range, Hyatt—who had worked at the plant for more than two and a half years—discussed the issue with both his co-workers and his boss, Joe Richard. Richard told him not to worry—that perhaps there would be an accident, or that maybe they could let the calendar "stay at 665 for two days, or some other manipulation to prevent the safety calendar from displaying '666.'"
But the plant reached 666 accident-free days in a row on March 12, 2010. Hyatt asked his boss for "religious accommodation," but the boss said "that he was not going to change the safety calendar, that Mr. Hyatt's religious beliefs were ridiculous, and that Mr. Hyatt could go to work with a '666' on his safety sticker or face a three (3) day suspension."
Hyatt said he accepted the three-day suspension, but when he returned to work on March 17 he was fired.
He filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and his attorney, Stephen Mixon, told the Associated Press that the agency granted him the right to sue the company in August.
The company did not return calls and emails seeking comment, and has not responded yet in court.

he'd have been forced to remove
it or be fired. >:(

The 666 days accident free is definitely comendable. However I have never heard of any company celebrating that specific number. Normally it is even hundreds. Makes you wonder what the true agenda is. I am thinking somebody wanted to mess with the Christian.

Could well be... figuring some of them would snap at the bait...
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

The stupid company should concern themselves with serious matters and get on with business.  The worker's issue with #666 is every bit as legitimate as hundreds of other things that come up and they should have just let it go.  If this is the true story and there are no other mitigating factors, I hope the worker wins and wins big.

I work on the Ohio River as a boat pilot. Of all the companies I've work and of all the barges I've seen, never seen a 666 barge #. There are thousands of barges out here.

I have seen a few people that were terrified of that number. To me that would be a phobia and would be included as a sickness. No idea how this will turn out for the man.

SHU. Of course it was for that purpose. Why not celebrate 665 days, or 667?? No doubt it was a slap at Christians trying to see how many would knuckle under. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Read the article again.  It says the workers wore a sticker on each day the plant operated accident free.  So there were stickers for days 665 and 667 as well.   If he had been thinking he could have just called in sick on that day and avoided the whole thing.  But then he probably didn't expect the company to fire him for refusing to were the 666 sticker.

Ok, I'm gonna break a personal rule here and name and discuss a current employer.

This may be edited at a later time...

***********EDITED TO REMOVE EMPLOYER'S NAME (PERSONAL BELIEFS)******

I work for an aluminum company as an Electrician. They smelt ore, cast ingots, and roll the ingots into sheet aluminum that becomes food and drink containers.  Days of safe operation are a Huge deal!!  There have been high numbers of OSHA recordables, and First aid injuries in the companys history, along with too many deaths.  We call the safety department the Safety Nazis because of all the rules that seem to restrict our being able to do our jobs.  However, I have to admit if it were not for those safety nazis I likely would not work there.  We have achieved over 1,200 days without injury in some departments, other areas are doing good to have 300 days pass without a major injury.  How major??  We have on site fully staffed medical department, and the plant's Fire department is back up to the local city and county back ups.

The sticker?? I think both parties could have handled it better.  As a Union Steward I have had to mediate a few similar (though not as severe) incidents.  Corporate mandates tend to be enforced to the letter.  If corporate office said employees will...well the local management tends to go overboard.

As a Christian I would have either called in that day, or simply left the sticker blank, or maybe smudged it so that 665 looked close enough from a distance.

Would the reason the sticker was worn make a difference ? The mark of the devil is only the mark if ment to be. That said I had a Glock that had the 3 numbers of the ser # 666 and it had feed problems .................. ;D

I wonder what the employer's side of the story is. Could this employee have just not worn the sticker, or did he make the situation a 'big deal' days ahead of it's happening?
I'm a Christian and would not have worn the 666 sticker either.
Or, maybe the Lord wanted this to be well advertised - the guy's belief and witness of his faith?
However, I have learned to hear both sides of any dispute. They are usually not the same story.

If creative heads had prevailed he could've worn a sticker that said: "1 year 43 weeks without an accident"   Same message, no mark of the Beast,  job and work continue...... just my 2 cents....

Well kinda...we've had three fires in the past 5 months.  Two electrical, one minor, one took out a 1,000 amp distribution panel.  One fire was in a coatings room where MEK was being used to clean up a spill and was ignited by static electricity from a workers shoes. That one was bad, but in all three cases injuries were minor.  First degree burns to one, and another was treated for heat exhaustion

Im thinkin-
This likely wasn't the first time this guy made a big stink out of nothing. I work with some guys like him, just do enough work to not get fired, complain about how bad the company is to work for, stretch breaks out 10 minutes longer than allowed, push the attendance policy to the edge, etc.... The company was glad to get a documentable reason to fire him but will probably lose in court due to some panty-wetter judge.

I think you are correct about the company having reasonable cause documentation.  If the sticker was labeled a job assignment, and he refused...then he just refused to work, and that can be grounds for dismissal.

I assume that after 666 days of no accidents, it took the company at least one more day to make up the stickers.  So, when they handed it to him, it would have been 667 days of no accidents.  He should have just taken a black magic marker, changed the last number to a 7, and put the sticker on.  Nobody would have said a word.  But instead, he had to try to take the company to the wall, to assert his "rights".  And now he is fired. Very dumb.

Unless he had a signed employment contract, if he is working in an at-will state, the company does not need any reason whatsoever to fire someone.  They don't need reasonable cause.  You are employed at-will, and can be terminated at any time.

There may be more to the story; there may not be.  Nobody should be forced to wear a sticker that goes against their religion.  Still, the company has a right to fire who they want.  Honestly, it sounds like a place I wouldn't work at anyways.  Hope the guy finds a better job out of all of this.
