Old model .32 S&W Iver Johnson owl head safety reloading?
« on: September 27, 2012, 01:43:06 PM »
Knowing the .32 S&W in both smokeless and black powder is low pressure, what would be everyone's thoughts on reloads for it? Like to make something light to pop rabbits up close with. Grama shot a weasel in the head 50 years ago or more back! My gunsmith gave it a work over fixing a non-returning trigger so it has been checked out. Like the one for auction below:

The one in the picture is a black powder revolver, and should not be fired with smokeless ammo. The frame is just plain old iron, without heat-treating.

I have several old Iver Johnson revolvers all of them are the ones with the owl looking forward and supposedly BP frames. I have shot quite a few light loaded smokeless loads in them over the years and have not blown one up yet. If you choose to do this do what I do, that is I look at the loading data for the cartridge and start and end with the lightest load listed.  I mostly shoot a 38 S&W one and usually shoot 125 gr cast bullets with a light load of Red Dot.  I have Chronoed my load at 550 fps.  Not a power house load but it is fun to shoot.

If you care for it and respect that it has lasted this long without being shot loose you will probably not want to be the one who shoots smokeless in it and shoots it loose.

Yeah it is a lightweight, and an heirloom, so when I get into loading for it I will keep it light. Would be nice to cook up a lightweight basement load  8)
