Good JHP projo for the 30 Carbine?
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:31:31 AM »
I have been using various soft point projos for loading the Carbine round.  I'd like to try some hollow points.  Can anybody reccomend a good projo?

I use the Speer 110 Varminter like shown above. Don't expect any expansion out of it though past 100 yds. Most often there's zero expansion even at closer ranges. But it is the only bullet that will expand at 30 carbine velocities from muzzle to 50 yds reliably. I also shoot these out of a 30 carbine pistol and at 1400'ps, they are just about reloadable from the body of a coyote. I still have some Speer half jackets that work fairly decent but I haven't seen of these for sale for quite some time. Kinda like the 357 146 half jacket HP SWC that come out of my Pythons so good you'd think I was shooting a rifle.

The Speer was one I had been considering.  I'm a little surprised to hear it doesn't expand.  With the semi jacket hollow point, I would have thought it would be a good candidate to do well at the 30 carbine velocity.

Anybody try the Hornaday XTP 90grain?  My father in law has been raving about the XTP but he loads them in a 44Magnum, which is a whole different kettle of fish.  That bullet being the other front runner for my next 30 carbine loading session.

Maybe that's a term more common in my neck of the woods than yours.

Yep, tried the 90 XTPs. If yer looking for a hunting bullet, this isn't it. From muzzle to about 50-60 yds the bullet pretty much blows up on meat. From that to 100 yds it does like you think a bullet should. After that, very little in the way of expansion. The bullet just sheds velocity too quick apparently. I've even tried some 85gr pills and it just seems like the bullets shed too much speed because they are too light. Move up with the bullet weight to carry more forward inertia and muzzle velocities fall and bullet construction far too heavy for the 30 carbine power. I settled on the Remington 110 gr Carbine soft nose bullets for hunting and the 90 XTP and 110 Speer Varminters for the pistols with the 110's the preferred bullet.

The only expanding bullets I have used are in a contender and were 125 Nosler BT's (someday I'll use one on a deer). At full power loads they would blow up ground squirrels at over 150 yds., I was really surprised at how much damage they did. The other bullets I used were 120 cast HP's at full blast, they were also quite destructive and suitable for my Win. M1 carbine. I used many different bullets in the SSK Contender bbl. w/some up to 180 Sierra match kings, all shot well but anything over 125 gr would not expand. I also used various 224 bullets in sabot's w/good luck in the TC but never tried them in the carbine, Anyway my stuff-Muddy

Haven't tried HP's, but have had good luck with Hornady's 1/2 jacketed 100gr. bullet and a book dose of H110.  ;)  Zero issues cycling and zero issues accuracy.  ;)  I just seat it to the jacket edge.

^^^^I just saw these the other day and wondered how they would work as a hunting bullet. The old Speer half jackets are pretty decent but they don't make them anymore. I guess I'll have to try these on a coyote and see what happens. FWIW, I also shot some of the Sierra 125HPs made for the 30-30. They are a fairly thin skinned bullet. Out of the rifle they worked fairly good to 100 yds and then nothing. From a pistol I got next to no expansion at 25 yds. Accuracy was so-so considering the small diameter but good enough for 100 yd hunting.

The first cartridge I loaded was a 30-30.  I used those 125 grain Sierra Hollow points for years (until I switched to a 25'06) They performed fine in a 30-30, and I recommend them to this day.  As for the 30 Carbine, if you have data for these try 'em

If there is a place to buy Winchester 110 gr HP bullets that would be my choice . I have used them ( factory loaded ) on deer with good results.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
