Nature signs of a hard winter??
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:38:45 PM »
Last year there were hardly any persimmons or acorns, what hickory nuts and walnuts there were were dried up inside. The winter was very mild. My neighbor told me last year that the winter would be mild, it was. I said how do you know?? She said, God feeds the critters don't he"" I said yes, of course he does. She says, well there ya have it, if it was going to be a hard winter don't ya reckon he'd a made more food for them to eat??

If the reverse is true then we might have a rough winter this year. Haven't chkd the hickories yet but the walnut trees are loaded as are the oaks, some persimmon tree limbs are almost dragging the ground they are so heavy with fruit, I don't ever remember seeing such a huge crop of persimmons. The seeds have a spoon in them indicating lots of snow but that doesn't mean much cause thats what it has had several years now. We'll see. POWDERMAN.  Grin Grin

Quit talkin about simmons, and such. Your makin me homesick. I miss the possum grapes and muskedimes (we called them as kids), sassafras, may pops and hicker nuts!I've lived in the Great NW longer than a lot of people have been on the blue marble, but my heart has never left the Sweet Sunny South!Another sign I remember the old folks mentioned was, if the wasps built close to the ground, the winter was gonna be nasty one!

Here in the Ozarks the higher up in the trees squirrels build their nests  the deeper the snow is gonna be. ;)

I can't agree with her about feeding his critters. After the driest year on record last year and the fifth driest this year there are very few critters left.

As for what the winter will bring I'll just give my stock answer for when anyone asks my opinion. I tell them to ask me next April. The ONLY people that predict the weather in these parts are truly fools and newcomers.  ;D

They said the weather man predicted a cold winter.  The indians said they better cut some more wood.  The next night, he said it would be even colder than he expected.  The indians cut even more wood.  The  third night, he said it would be record cold...all the indians fell to and cut pile and piles of wood...finally someone called the weather man and asked how he knew it would be that cold...he said he'd been watching the indians, and from the wood they were cutting, it should be record breaking cold... :o

HUNTER. The sassafrass are turning beautiful colors now, love to dig the roots in the spring for the tea too. I used to dig it for the older folks when I lived in ILL, they swore the blood thickened up in the winter and the tea thinned it back out in the spring, a lot of them wouldn't dream of starting the new yr without their spring tonic. Sometimes I'd get a quarter, sometimes a piece of cake or a few cookies, sometime just a smile. I just enjoyed helping them.
Persimmon pudding, now thats a real  treat. Patty tricked our gdaughter into taking a bite of a green one, I didn't think  she'd fall for, but she did. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Well we're in for a nasty one then, cause the yellow-jackets built IN THE GROUND under one of my pines. Thousands of them. Their trapped now though with a big rock. Hope your wrong on the winter.

I have the boys splitting alot of firewood, so I'm getting ready for one. Havn't checked, anybody know what the Farmers Almanac predicts? gypsyman
