Old style stock finish
« on: September 28, 2012, 07:19:13 PM »
I got this stuff off evilbay and found it really works well. It is a rub for finishing stocks.
Beeswax, linseed oil and turpentine in equal amounts. I tried simply rubbing it on
and polishing. Works good, but takes a while. In an inspired revelation, I decided
to warm it up.  What you do is rub on a thin coat  then slightly cook it with a hair
dryer. Wipe with a soft cloth and you are done. You can handle it carefully but
its best to let it harden for a day. A little more gloss than tru-oil. I compare it to
about 6-8 coats of rubbed tru-oil except it doesn't take a week.

I have used it over a tru-oil finish and instead of a tru-oil finish

Then the waxy soft cloth is an exellent polishing and dust rag.

For a copenhagen snuff can full cost $8 delivered. I can't make it that cheap.

Another product that works well is Howard Feed-N-Wax...

http://www.amazon.com/Howard-FW0016-Feed-N-Wax-Conditioner-16-Ounces/dp/B001BKQYGW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348905292&sr=8-1&keywords=howard+feed-n-wax

Best stuff I've used on stocks with an oil finish previously applied. Most of the stocks I've refinished over the past 30 years were done with Tru-Oil, and Feed-N-Wax really keeps them nice. Popular with the Milsurp crowd where guys often don't want to disturb the finish too much on an old rifle. Many woodworkers use it as the only finish on natural wood surfaces.

On wood finished with lacquer, poly, etc, I find it useless (even though the package says it's "for all wood finishes"). Just wipes right off. On surfaces where it can soak in though, it's the cat's meow.  :)

Good to know P.A., you just sold another tin for Mr. John Heard as i'm getting ready to strip down an old renegade stock and i'm going to give that stuff a try. Just curious what the apprx. coverage area is for a tin? Would a single tin complete a halfstock? Thanks,. J

A single tin will do a bunch of stocks as long as you don't put it on like penut butter.

That feednwax sounds interesting gets 4 1/2 stars, most used it on furniture. They mention
it does have some color. 16oz will do a lot of stocks.

Good luck with your project JR, woodwork makes you feel good.

Thanks PA, I look forward to making sawdust. Do kinda regret losing the blonde stock this renegade(455bigblocks old rifle) wears but its going to look good no matter what, the walnut has excellent figure imho. John Heard is on top of his business, quick replies and promise of first available shipping, i'll keep his email address handy, I appreciate the recommendation and hairdryer tip. Will post on my results.  J

Awesome stuff. I did your hairdryer trick and found it MUCH simpler than any staining project, no mess and smells nice, taste ok and really brings out the grain. I really appreciate the lead on this stuff,. Jeff

Min-Wax Satin Tungoil Finish is inexpensive and much like the varnish finishes our forefathers used.  It's also much more weather resistant and looks awesome.
