Blue tongue?
« on: September 29, 2012, 05:51:44 PM »
Have any of you fella's encountered this problem this fall?

A buddy from the Coles county area says the woods smell of rotting deer carcases near him. Told me that between him and his neighbor they have found over twenty dead deer.

Is this wide spread?  The guy is no biologist but at the same time he is not one to make stuff up either.

It's also called "Catarrhal Fever" and is insect borne, causing a viral infection. It is mainly in sheep, but can be transmitted to deer. Nasty lookin, and mean to the animal.

Interesting.

They figured it must have been a water borne thing. The drought has had things dried up for months now and the few water holes were very nasty looking.

Up here we get a algea bloom that comes on some warm shallow lakes that can kill your dog if it drinks much of it. I sorta figured it was that sort of thing.

we have had a outbreak of it here in SW MO. when i stopped by the local bow shop for some arrows the bow pro was saying he had heard of a lot of dead deer found.a buddy from work has found 2 dead deer in his pond lately about 12 mi from me. we have a lot of stock ponds on our farm but i havent seen any dead deer.i also walked about 1/2 mi of my creek today and didnt see any. from what i understand the last thing a deer does when it has it is try to drink. it may make them unable to swallow.most of the dead ones here are found in or near water.

i have been looking for something like this to happen as deer numbers here are prob as high as they have ever been for as long as i can remember.

i dont know a lot about it but would like to learn more if anybody has any good info?

It called blue-green algae down here, and Lake Texoma has been off limits for two summers. Same deal. Brain eatin critters I guess. Will kill pets or people.
