New to me 22 mag
« on: September 30, 2012, 01:53:57 PM »
I just picked up a SS1 Ultra Mag 22 magnum at a gun show.  I thought I got a good deal until I looked on here and saw where a few people gotem a lot cheaper.  Paid $225 for it, but it looks brand new...I can tell it has been shot because the barrel is dirty, but that's the only indication.  I'm happy with it anyway.  I'd never seen a rimfire Ultra.  I'm just ready to go shoot it now!!!  Anybody have one?  and have any ammo suggestions?

Good luck with it!!
I bought one like that a number of years back... I wont tell you I paid less than 150 brand new in the box..  ::) :o ;)

Sorry brother. But it dosen't matter what you paid, you wanted it, you will enjoy it and you got it!!  ;) "

I wanted a Savage 410/22 I/O. I looked and looked did not want plastic stocks, I wanted Walnut and I wnated a first model... Well I found one and I paid nearly $600 of it. It is one of the nicest I have seen with 95% case colors remaining, but it too was origionally sold for less than 1/5 of what I paid...

Ive had an Ultra Varmint 22M for quite a few years now, and nobody else around here that I know has one. Mine was tight and took several hundred rounds to really 'settle' in, but I kept it and just let it keep getting better and better. It wears BC Carbine wood now and I fit a Sportster 22LR barrel to it for an open sight swap out. During the same time Ive had it I also had a custom Win. Low Wall with a Mdl. 52 heavy barrel fit to it and chambered 22M. Back to back at the same  shoots the UV did as well. Guess which one went down the road?
I use mostly the Win. Dynapoint 'flash plated' 45gr. lead HP at a chrono'ed 1500fps out of mine; Im a cast bullet shooter by choice so that pretty much duplicates the 22Hornet loads I used to make and is a ballistic equiv. of the old 22 WCF.

Great rifle and it is what it is. As long as you like it and OK with the price its all good. Never had an ultra but I bet it will drive nails. I love the 22 mag., light and for a small round it does the job. I have killed allot of hogs with one, shooting them in the eye or in the ear. From 25 to 50 yards. I like the Fed.game shok 50 gr., price and they do the job or cci maxi mag. But have fun with it and if ya ever down my way look me up and maybe we can get some hogs down.

Mine likes the lighter bullets.
I have sighted mine in with the Remington 35 grain bullets with the gold plastic tip.
I have use the 30 grain federal rounds to good effect on varmints but the Remington is what is most available in my area so went to it.
I paid about $225 for it new about 10 years ago and mounted a red dot on it at first and used 50 grain feds for coyotes in the yard at night.
Later swaped out the red dot for a Weaver 6X38 and works great the 50 grain bullets seemed to wonder around a little and went ot the lighter bullets starting with the 34 grain Win HP but they were hard to find more at a good price.

I still havn't made it out to shoot it yet, but I did put a cheap Simmons 3x9x50 on it.  I think it'll be a good rifle.  I like it anyway...really like how it looks!
