686 rear sight
« on: October 01, 2012, 03:41:56 AM »
I replaced the front sight on my 686 which has an 8 3/8" barrel.  I need to raise the back sight.  The factory sight will not go up enough.  I have looked for a sight blade to change out.  I am confused on measurements of height.  Where would I get a higher blace

Hi Ruskin. S&W used to offer sight blades for replacement in standard sizes. Black or white outline. They probably still do, haven't looked in a while. S&W, Brownells and others should have them.

It comes with a new elevation screw and nut as the old ones get hammered taking it out. You could also buy a rear sight assy, cost more but no drilling and refitting. HTH, 30cal.
Hold still while I overthink this.

Bowen Classic Arms sells their "Rough Country" S&W rear sights with various height blades, so you could check those out.

They are not cheap, but they are the HIGHEST QUALITY in design and manufacture, as I have 2 (soon to be 3) of them, all in the "Shallow Vee" design (with gold bead front sights).

Here's a view of the sight picture from my S&W 617 with those sights:

Just to be 100% clear, Bowen sell the standard square notch blades too.

Tight groups.
